The true meaning of baptism is a mystery revealed: it symbolizes death, burial and rebirth, in the literal sense. Judaism at the time of Jesus was divided into more or less three central parts: Sadducees, Pharisees and Essenes. The latter was the faith of both John the Baptist and Jesus (Jesus was an Essene rabbi). Essenes taught and firmly believed in reincarnation, which has always been a part of Judaism. The idea of baptism and resurrection was distorted somewhat in the translation by later "Christians" (i.e. Paulists) but reincarnation and karma are at the source of Jesus's true teachings.

Here is the symbolic meaning of water baptism.
Romans 6:3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
It is the baptism of the Spirit that makes one a true born again Christian.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

Baptism is a ceremony. It symbolizes outwardly that a person has been cleaned up inside by God. When a person is 'born again' or 'saved' it means they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Jesus actually washes away your sins-past, present and future. Once this happens-a person is them Baptized or "publicly washed" to show that they are now spiritually clean.
The act of Baptism does not not save a person, a person gets Baptized after they are saved.
