To die of lung cancer is better than staggering down and hitting the head, being killed. Sounds like a mixed up affair.

I understand your situation, however I don't recommend you to convert. First, Islam is based on the 7th century Arabia. It has advanced a little. Cigarettes were not popular back then, so no wonder it is not haram. Technically, Quran only mentions wine as haram. But, scholars interpret it as drugs and alcohol nowaday to just make it sound more scientific. Go take some Cultural Anthropology and Ancient history courses at a community college. Alcohol consumption and Pork are taboo in many so called pagan traditions/cults. It has nothing to do with health. Everything we eat has some side effects. It's the ******** that Muslims come up to justify their stupid laws. All animals are technically dirty, go to a farm or a meat factory, you will be disgusted. If you think Christianity was a fairytale, I have to tell you that, Islam is no better than that fairy tale. It is like comparing Harry Potter with Twilight. Just because Twilight is newer and more exotic, it does not make it any better or the real fairy tale! There's really no true religion, if there was one, there would not be this many traditions. Religions are man made, to relief pain, answering depressing question with convincing answers, making profit, system of mass control.

They're not. But becuase it is not SPECIFICALLY ruled out, they make it ok. This is not right. My husband smokes and he also likes to remain blind to this fact. Smoking is suicide which is not allowed. When you finally DO break through, they use the lame excuse "I will go to my grave and you will go to your's". You can't teach an old dog new tricks. I just know if my 5 month old son starts smoking because his father does, he has a few months of not being able to sit or lift that hand coming when I find out.
My husband used to smoke in the house, but I have slowly gotten him to stop. He only smokes on the porch or goes outside now. They also smoke because their fathers do. I hate it. I suffer from chronic bronchitis, and I am not afraid to tell his family not to smoke around me or my children. My husband, from Pakistan, says it's rude to stop a guest from doing as they please. I retort with "It's rude to expect to be able to endanger somebody's health in their own home". That shuts him up.

No smoking is not ok.. just like other people in this world do not follow their religion ...people have weakness and they should overcome it.. why do you act like Muslims are the only people who do wrong?? do the Christians follow EVERY single rule????? Tell me.. why do you not point that out when they do wrong?? It seems to me that people just want to say that Islam is such a bad religion...and all the other religions are so pure and good...whatever..be real

Smoking is not allowed in Islam either, but some say their is not direct ruling to say it is not allowed like their is for alcohol so they do it. Here is a fatwa from Islam Q&A that will explain smoking in Islam.
Question :
Is smoking cigarettes Haraam?
Answer :
Praise be to Allah and peace and blessings be on His Prophet SAWS.
Smoking is one of the things which has caused a lot of problems and harm these days and it has spread like wild fire. Before we discuss this topic in detail, we should know that Allaah the Almighty has divided things in the world into two types, good or permissible (al-tayyibaat, al-halaal) and evil or prohibited (al-khabaa'ith, al-haraam), and there is no third type. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) in surat al-A'raaf (7:157):
"And He makes good things halaal for them and bad things haraam."
Considering this fact, smoking can either be permissible and good or prohibited and evil.
Thus, we present some of its characteristics and let the person asking the question see himself in which type lies smoking.
There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for health. It is one of the major causes of lung cancer and other diseases. It is also one of the major causes of death. Since, it is known that the Islamic law prohibits everything that is harmful for a human being. Allah said (interpretation of meaning):
"Do not kill yourself. Allah is Merciful unto you." (Surat al-Nisaa' 4:29)
In addition, His Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:
"There is no harm or causing of harm (in Islaam)." (Arabic "laa darar wa laa diraar")
He SAWS (peace be upon him) also said:
"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ... his body as to what he engaged it in."
Smoking also goes against the saying of the Prophet SAWS:
"Your body has a right on you."
There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for the health of others who inhale the polluted breath of the smoker. Medical research has proven the harmful effects of smoking mothers on their children.
The offensive smell caused by smoking is a source of pain to the worshippers of Allah among humans and angels. The angels are offended and suffer from the same things that the human beings suffer from. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):
"Those who cause harm to believing men and women without any reason do a great sin." (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:58)
The money that is spent on cigarettes is used on buying a harmful thing and is therefore an extravagance. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):
"… and do not be extravagant wasters. Those who are extravagant are kinsmen of Satan." (Surat al-Israa' 17:26-27)
Extravagance (in Islam) means spending on something haraam.
Spending money on cigarettes is a waste of resources as well. The Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:
"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ..... what he owned as to how he spent it."
Considering all that has been presented, it can be clearly seen that smoking is an evil among many others. It is not permissible to indulge in it, or buy and sell it, or even to offer it to others. It is incumbent on a person who is addicted to it that he must make all efforts and get whatever necessary treatment to stop it. If the unbelievers have understood the harm caused by smoking and made laws regarding it, the Muslims should be even more eager to stop it and treat those who are addicted to it.
We ask Allah the Almighty to cure everyone indulging in this evil and help him in giving it up. Allah is the Best Guide to the Right Path.

Just a guess but I think most prohibitions are found in the Koran. Cigarettes were not around when it was written.

Maybe because they did not have smoking when this religion was established around 500 AD. Drinking has been around much longer.
