I was married to a Presbyterian minister for 25 years and now have a negative feeling toward churches in general. Specifically, the tend to "pick and choose" which sins they want to judge, and put too much importance on materialism - for example, spending $10,000 to decorate the vestibule and refusing to pay for non-christian youth that weren't "members" to go a youth conference. Homosexuality is "wrong", whereas owning a huge home with a pool and a beamer in the driveway while people are starving, is okay. I'm looking for a church that will allow each person to decide for themselves what is right and wrong and who will welcome ALL to the worship service.

How liberal do you want to go? I am sure there is a United Methodist church there, or you can go all the way and look for an Episcopal church.

Why would you want to find a "liberal" church? From my understanding, a liberal church is a church that compromises the word of God in order to be more "inclusive". True churches welcome everyone to come just as they are but they tell them that God loves them too much to leave them "just as they are".

Any church that doesn't preach the whole word of God and that accomodates people who don't want to repent of their sins is just a "feel good" church that deceives it's members into thinking that they are going to Heaven. But Jesus said...

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name (say prayers in your name), and cast out demons in your name (act like we were empowered by you), and do many mighty works in your name (put money in the collection box)?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.' Matthew 7:21-23

"Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Matthew 7:13-15
