Definitely use an ATM. If you look at most banks' rates, there is a spread of about 10% (ie difference between buying and selling).
If you use an ATM it will be about half that. You will be charged a fee for using your debit card abroad, but if you make infrequent larger withdrawal amounts, you will save a lot of money.
See to use your credit card where possible in shops/restaurants and debit card in ATM

Get them at a bank or travel agency before you go. If you use your card abroad to draw cash out you generally pay quite high fees. Marks and Spencers have good rates or ask at Thomas Cook for their deal rate on amounts over £500
