When I was in the army we used to say there were no atheists in the trenches. It is a human tendency. When people are in the most need some (I am not saying all by any means) will call out for aid from anywhere they can get it. Even if this means asking for help from a deity that they previously claimed didn't exist. On top of this, though, many people, especially in America, come from a religious background, having been raised in a Christian home, so its almost reflexive.

Rom 1:18 For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,
Rom 1:19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them.
Rom 1:20 From the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.

Funny you ask, I like questions like this. I am a PRACTICING CHRISTIAN-CATHOLIC to be exact. for 39 and themsome years I have been a practicing and confirmed Catholic. In addition I teach Catechism and RCIA/RCIC (Rights of Initiation for adults and children) a program for non confirmed Catholics wishing to complete their sacraments or those wishing to become a Catholic.
In my years, this is true many rely on God to "SAVE" them when in diar need but won't praise him or follow his lead which ultimately would give you options and paths to follow that owuld derail you from times of truble. The problem is, people want to do what they want and worry about the consequences later which result in death, injury, anger and other uncontrollable emotions which are not God's fault, but your own for making an obvious choice. You have to listen to your heart, follow it and mostly you will find that is the path God intended you to follow. It's when you don't is when things become a problem. Remember, the devil is partially to blame for things happening and the other is your poor decision, Not God's. he lays it out for you, its the temptation of the devil and your will to choose or not to choose.
However, once bitten doesn't mean your doomed for life, you have to pick yourself up and try again until you get it, but if you think not believing, following or winging it will get you anywhere then you will always be on the downside of God by choice. Blame yourself and only truly ask God for help if you beleive and are willing to follow. People are quick to ask God for help but have to listen and look for signs of recovery and when they dont realize its not God's fault for a sour outcome. Just my opinion from experience.

Just like in the bible. Jesus went about preaching the word, but what did they ask of Him instead. They wanted to be healed of their sickness. Then when Jesus healed them did they believe. They wanted help from their now now sitiuation and not what they really needed help with. Nothing has changed except the fact that once God does help one of there problems they still dont believe it was God who did it.

I've heard a professed atheist exclaim, "Oh my God," (uppps, should be a little 'g!'). And I've also heard him say, "There he was, before God and everyone, naked as a jay bird!"
When I asked this atheist why he was making reference to a deity that, according to him didn't exist, he had the good sense to appear embarrassed before 'blowing it off.'
I think it could be that even though my friend does not believe in God, when he is in the company of non-atheists he subconsciously experiences a momentary desire to 'fit in,' be one of the boys just like everyone else and so he indulges in one of our 'superstitions.'
I guess we are just a... 'Bad influence on him.'

I believe it's a natural reaction...we all know God exist, we all feel him, whether we are following him or not. It's simply the nature of man. I've known some very harden atheist...but when the rood caves in on their lives they ALL run to God..every time!

because God is Great, in His hands is all good, His is the kingdom and for Him is all praise. some people only think of God when they want or need something or help, they dont think of god during happy times.

if people truly belive in god and prayer we seek that out in hard times. if you are a believer then you know god is never late. our prayers maynot be answered in the time we wish but what time he knows is the right time.sometimes he lets us get in much hard times so we WILL turn to him so he can PROVE to us that he is their for us and will never forsake us.and with faith in him can bring us out of whatever trouble we are in. its a shame that for alot of us thats the only time we call on him. it should be an everyday thing . without him we would be nothing or have nothing.

we all know that God exists we were told to worship him alone.
satan encourages us to deny Gods existence, that is why there are people who have forgotten, we have a need to worship something because we know we should whether it be music (bands) sports heros, drugs, shopping pets or even just ornaments, nothing completely satisfies us though does it? ooohh i need to go shopping so i go when i come back with new shoes etc why do i feel bad?
