Mike Tyson. Could have been among the very best but we all know what a head case he became. His first 18 fights (all KO's) were against club fighters. It helped create a name for him but once he won the title he showed a lot of cracks in the armor against the top contenders. He won for awhile but eventually got nailed on a regular basis. Way overrated.
Underrated has to go to Larry Holmes. Bad timing on his part. He had to follow Ali as champ and although his skills were great, compared to Ali he could not compare. He could have retired as the second undefeated heavyweight champion but fought one too many fights. His 50th fight was a joke. He was clearly the winner but the fight was stolen by the judges. It was a crime.

Wow...there are so many overrated boxers out there. Rocky Marciano was very overrated because he fought a bunch of over the hill fighters. Michael Spinks was given two decisions over Larry Holmes because the powers that be didnt want Larry to break "The Rock's" beloved 49-0 record. Mike Biteson...oops...Tyson was a pit bull with a punch, but no skill to speak of. George Foreman was a lumberjack with gloves but no style or skill. I could go on....
Underrated...
Well lets see....Let's start with Larry Holmes (see above). Evander Holyfield was the most courageous fighter ever(even though he should retire). Smokin Joe Frazier is best remembered for his fights with Ali and his loss to Foreman but he was a fighter who never stopped coming. Meldrick Taylor was a great fighter until he was ruined by Don King and Richard Steele (see the first Chavez fight). Almost every heavyweight in the Ali era ecept for Ali was underrated because of Ali's personality.
Most overrated: Rocky Marciano
Most underrated:Larry Holmes

overrated: Mike Tyson, Roy Jones Jr. If you check their record, they mostly fought bums, carpenters and losers who they can beat up. They haven't really beaten up good fighters and when they lose they get beat up so badly and gets knocked out cold.
underrated: Larry Holmes. He was undefeated and successfully defended his title many times. Beat the best of his generation and don't get the recognition he deserves. It's sad and I think he's still sour about it.

underrated Larry Holmes. He was right. Marciano wasn't good enough to hang up his jockstrap.
