My 1 yr. old female neo mastiff has been treated with amoxicillin for a UTI. Curiously, the vet said that if it didn't clear up after tx., and if I noticed that she has urinated while sleeping, we may have to do further tests. Something about specific gravity in the urine test??? Well, she has peed in her sleep twice since Friday-not a lot-but enough to notice. Her urine still looks quite concentrated. Any idea what she was eluding to? Ican't get her till Monday-The vet on call has no idea about my dog, and sz this can wait?? Is there something really wrong???

Ask your vet if he tested the urine with a stick, or if he actually spun it and looked under the microscope. Also, ask if there was blood present in the urine - without red blood cells, it would be overly presumptious for a vet to say your dog has a UTI.
Specific gravity tests usually are to see how the dog's kidney's are functioning. This is not a good determinant for diagnosing a UTI.
When you collect the urine, can you see sediment in the bottom of the cup (grainy, sandy looking stuff)? if you can, most likely a look under a microscope will reveal that you dog has crystals in her urine, which doesn't necessarily mean an infection, but the two can go hand in hand. If crystals are present without blood, perhaps you need to do something as simple as switching your dogs food, as certain foods can cause this reaction in certain dogs.

the best thing to do with any antibiotics is to give them EXACTLY as directed and to FINISH them off completely, regardless of whether or not your pet "seems" better. If you have done this and have seen no result, I would bring some urine back on Monday and retest...perhaps she needs more meds or a larger dose.

In the mean time, do not limit your dog's water, and remember to take her out to pee frequently. if she does have a UTI it will make it worse for her to hold it. Hope this helps.

Well, it is a pretty simple test!!!!!!!! All the do is take a drop of the urine and put it on the lense of the refratometer and read it. Has the vet done a FULL urinalysis?? Like where you have brough in a sample and he has spun it down to see what is in it. That should go along with the specific gravity. They should be looking at many things. A bladder infection, kidney problems, ureter defects...the whole 9 yards. Sometimes Amoxi is not the greatest at clearing UTI's.
Monday should be fine, and go from there. Ask specific questions as to what they are looking for and what the vet thinks it is.

Well, amoxi should clean up the bacteria in the urine but has nothing to do with specific gravity. If the urine still looks concentrated- dark yellow/orange in color- you need to encourage her to drink more. If she is drinking plenty of water and s.g is still high, kidney function tests should be ran. Just takes a sample of blood and most vets can run the lab work in house.
In regards to the leaking urine, usually has nothing to do with UTI's or s.g. I will assume she is a spayed female. Occasionally spayed females with develop urinary incontinence and will need to take drugs in order to keep it controlled. It is something easy to correct but does require lifelong medication- see website below.
So long as your pup seems alert, can urinate freely and is eating and drinking okay- it can wait until tomorrow. Good luck.

Is she still on amoxicillin? Some times it can take several days for it to clear up. And if the antibiotic doesn't clear it up, further tests will need to be ran. Unless you can see that there is blood in her urine, it can wait til Monday, but call first thing.
