The difference lies in the amount of truth they teach people.
Mormon church (100% truth)- officially The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the restored church of Jesus Christ with the same organization as the original church. It's established on the foundation of prophet and 12 apostles, Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone or the head of the church. It's the only church with authority or the priesthood to act in God's name, meaning the only true church on earth that teaches the complete gospel of Jesus Christ and provides the saving ordinances such as baptism, gift of the Holy Ghost etc. (apparently, it's not a cult) www.mormon.org
Catholic church (some truth) - it is NOT built upon apostles and prophets and was established on apostate doctrine, although it teaches many good things, lots of teachings have been twisted ages ago for various reasons. This church does not have the authority of God to teach people or perform baptisms etc - because it does not receive direct revelations from God through a prophet. Trinity or Holy Mary or other inaccurate or false traditions or doctrines have been invented by men in that church.
Other Christian churches have tried to correct the Catholic church and split from it as Orthodox, protestant or baptist or presbytarian etc.... all not completely succeeding because they still did not have a prophet. THey adapted the Trinity concept, which was made by men, not revealed of God.... Again, they teach many good things, but still lack the authority and the revelations from God.Thus there SOOOO many of them arguing debating with each other and people are being tossed to and fro by every wind of man-made doctrine.

Heresy falls into 1 of 2 basic categories:
a false concept of the personal deity of Christ
or mixing works with faith.
Mormonism is guilty of both.
The Deity of Jesus Christ is a fundamental doctrine of Christianity, yet the Mormons deny this truth. Jesus Christ is not acknowledged as the eternal Son of God in the Mormon church. The Mormon Jesus was a preexisting spirit who was exalted, just as Mormon followers hope to be exalted someday.
God is a Trinity (I Jn. 5:7), and the second Member of that Trinity is the Lord Jesus Christ. John 1:1 says that "the Word was God," and John 1:14 tells us that "the Word was made flesh." Jesus Christ is the Word incarnate, and John 1:1 tells us that the Word was God; so Jesus Christ is God.
Jesus allowed Thomas to address Him as "My Lord and my God" in John 20:28. In Isaiah 9:6, He is called "The mighty God" and "The everlasting Father," and we read in Micah 5:2 that Jesus is "from everlasting."
The Lord allowed people to worship Him in John 10:38 and in Matthew 14:33, and since He is "God with us" (Mat. 1:23) He also has power to forgive sins (Mk. 2:5). Jesus Christ is clearly Deity, yet this doctrine is denied by the Mormons.
Mormons believe that one's salvation is based on such good works as baptism, good deeds, missionary work, and following Mormon teachings. In The Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, justification by faith in Jesus Christ is called a "pernicious doctrine" twice and he states that it has been "an influence for evil." (pp. 107, 480) Bruce McConkie once stated at Brigham Young University that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is "improper and perilous" (Church News, March 20, 1982, p. 5)
Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Romans 4:5 says that salvation comes to those who do not work for salvation, but believe on Jesus Christ instead!
The Mormons deny the Trinity and the existence of a literal burning Hell, yet they promote polytheism (many gods), baptism for the dead, and the notion that Jesus and Satan were originally spirit brothers! Make no mistake about it--Mormonism is a dangerous cult.
The Church of Rome added paganism and introduced the central heresy that has produced other false doctrines - they deny the finished work of Christ but believe in a continuing sacrifice that produces things like sacraments and praying for the dead, burning candles, etc. They do not teach a false concept of the personal diety of Christ, but their emphasis on the "continual sacrifice" and rejection of the Lord's finished work breeds a concept that causes people to try to earn their own salvation by works, penance, indulgences, and many other satanically conceived ideas.

The real "church" of God is made up of all the people who have been born again by the Holy Spirit. These people may be in different denominations and God only knows for sure who they are. In almost all congregations there will be some people who make up the true church and some who have yet to believe and be born again.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
1 Peter 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,...
1 Peter 1:22-23 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;.....you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:5
A good Christian church teaches only what the Bible teaches. The Catholic church adds to what the Bible says because supposedly the Pope get's special revelations from God from time to time. Christians say that this is very suspect because some of the Pope's "revelations" contradict what God has already said in the Bible. As to Mormons....
What Do Mormons Believe: Divine Authority
The Mormon church uses two sources as its primary authorities: the Book of Mormon and the Bible. The Doctrine and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price are also viewed as divinely authoritative. The Christian church uses the Holy Bible alone as its authority from God. Joseph Smith is not recognized as a prophet.
What Do Mormons Believe: The Nature of God
The Mormon church sees God as the Supreme Being of the universe. However, He gradually acquired that position over a long period of time by living a perfect and righteous life. God the Father has a body (flesh and bones). The Christian church proclaims God as eternally and infinitely supreme. He is the same today as always. He is a spirit Being.
What Do Mormons Believe: The Nature of Man
The Mormon church teaches that humans exist as spirit beings before their birth. At physical birth, bodies are given to these spirits. They are also given an opportunity for free-will choice. The physical world represents a period of probation. The status of a person in the afterlife is determined by the way that person lived their life on Earth. If the person lived by a satisfactory standard, (including the fulfillment of Mormon temple obligations) that person has the potential to become a god in the after-life. They can also produce "spirit children" to populate a world of his own (like God did with the earth). The Christian church holds that humans do not exist as spirits prior to being born into the world. Humans cannot attain godhood or populate other worlds with "spirit children."
What Do Mormons Believe: The Nature of Jesus Christ
The Mormon church views Jesus and Satan as spirit brothers and sons of God. God put forth His plan of salvation for the world, and Satan proposed his own plan. Jesus accepted the Father's plan and offered to implement it as the Savior. The Father chose Jesus, and the spirit of Jesus was given a body through the virgin Mary. He was crucified on a Roman cross, and rose from the dead three days later to establish His deity. The character and life of Jesus is attainable by anyone who performs at such a righteous level. The Christian church teaches that Jesus Christ has existed eternally as the Son of God, the second "person" of the Trinity. Jesus took on human flesh about 2000 years ago and was born into the world through the virgin Mary. He was crucified on a Roman cross for our sins, and rose from the dead three days later to establish His deity.
What Do Mormons Believe: How do we Achieve Salvation
The Mormon church holds that Jesus Christ overcame physical death and guaranteed physical resurrection to all mankind. However, spiritual death can only be avoided through personal obedience of God's commandments. Forgiveness of sins requires faith, repentance and baptism by an approved Mormon priest. The practice of baptism for the dead is an extension of this belief, in which Mormons are baptized in proxy for those who have died without proper baptism. The Christian church teaches that we are unable to live a life righteous enough to meet God's perfectly holy standard. Therefore, we establish a relationship with God by faith in the work of Christ on the cross, not by our own works. Baptism and good deeds are acts of obedience to God, but not the means for gaining eternal salvation.
What Do Mormons Believe: Life After Death
The Mormon church maintains that although there is temporary punishment for those that are most wicked, Jesus Christ will establish a new kingdom that will consist of three levels: the celestial kingdom, the terrestrial kingdom, and the telestial kingdom. The Christian church holds that there are only two possible fates after death, heaven or hell. These locations are final, both physically and spiritually.
