Firstly, Adam would have known what a sword was because one of his oldest sons killed Abel, and the Lord basically said that the earth was quickly "filled with violence".
Many of the early 'birds' here were not very righteous.
God had to start again via Noah.
Also, Adam lived for well over 900 years.
Remember?
Plus he also needed to make tools for his own living and general protection.
Swords or cutting tools were absolutely essential to that.
But, more importantly than these points, this account we have was not the work of Adam, but of Moses.
Various scriptures record that Moses saw God, or talked with Him "as one man speaketh with another".
There are other accounts, not in the Bible, which actually declare that Moses saw the Creation in vision form.
In other words, he was highly chosen of God to be given such a special vision, as this record was lost among the children of Israel whom he had to lead, since they had been living with and in bondage to the Egyptians for 400 years.
So God had to re-establish many of these long-lost truths among the records of His chosen, Israel.
Also, Abraham received revelations on such matters, even before Moses.
It is likely that some of his record was also had anciently, even if other parts of their records had been lost.
As for the level of Adam's knowledge, he was taught from the Spirit of God many things - no doubt, beyond what you or I know.
He lived over 900 years and probably knew many times more than the most advanced person living today.
It is also very possible that he was a very advanced intelligence, in general - that is, even in addition to his great many years of life and learning on earth.
Why do I say this??
Well, holy writ tells us that in the end - Judgment Day - we will ALL confess that all God's works and ways are Just.
It could only be declared just of Him, if Adam was one of the very most intelligent spirits placed here to start with.
Otherwise, if God had started with a nitwit, or even only a half intelligent person, we could all claim that God never gave man the best start at the beginning!!
We could say to Him:
"Well, what do you expect of our human race and of Cain, when you put a drip down here as the Father of our whole human race to begin with??"

Probably Adam invented the word sword just like he made up the names for all of the animals.
Genesis 2:19 So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

It was not Adam who set the angel by the gate.........God placed an angel by the gate with the flaming sword to keep all humans out of Eden. Once Adam and Eve had eaten from the tree of life of good and evil......many things were revealed to them that they did not know before.

I guess that as soon as he saw it, he knew it was a sword. I don't believe that Moses made up the story. =P
