Do ALOT of homework here. Learn all you can about breeds you are interested in. There are tons of reading materials available! Speak to others who have the kinds of dogs you like. Learn from their experiences. The goal is to find a good match for you and the intended dog.
Better yet, volunteer at a local animal shelter. You will gain valuable experiences with different types of dogs and who knows? Maybe you'll connect with the perfect pup for you. Good luck.

As for the first answer you got, the breeds are spelled Pomeranian and Shih Tzu - both are high maintenance regarding coat. Personally I feel a bit reluctant to offer any advice when you have not thought deeper on these issues than to decide size and some rather superficial traits, but have a look at Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. For more info on breeds and dogs in general, turn to the American Kennel club at www.akc.org.
Buy only from a recognized breeder, not from puppy mills or pet shops. And no, it is not more expensive. :-)

As poor of a reputation Pit Bulls have (mainly due to ignorance & improper handling by awful or incompetent people), Pits have a wonderful disposition: they are loyal, intelligent, energetic & sweet.
If you are concerned about having a Pit, a Border Collie may be your best choice. Much like Pits, they are very intelligent, energetic & sweet, plus they are fluffy.
www.akc.org may help you decide. To adopt, visit www.petfinder.com or www.aspca.org
Good luck in your search.

Got the perfect fluffy dog for you: SHIH TZU or LHASA APSO. They are great dogs. I owned a Lhasa, and just recently had to put her to sleep because of bladder cancer, but let me tell you, she was one hell of a dog. I also babysit a Shihtzu for my friend. They are just as nice, and as much as I hate to admit it, have a better personality that a Lhasa Apso. Go with the Shihtzu! You won't be sorry!!!

Sound like a labador retriever would be perfect for you. They don't shed much, real affectionate, easy to train, love to exercise, and possesses most of the things you are looking for in a pet.

every type of dog has it's own personality. pick one which match yours. for example, i have a little dog, but his race its hysterical. he barks all the time, driving me crazy. he is now 12, but still barks. I'll never make the mistake to pick one from this race again.
