I read them years ago and they were fascinating, opened up a whole different world even if it is imaginary...I was willing to suspend my disbelief at the time.

I read the first one a few times, and it was horrible. I couldn't stand it and regretted it each time. I kept hoping that somehow I'd get it, but I finally concluded that there really wasn't anything to get. All I kept thinking was that he was just a big sucker being conned by a clever old man, and that the whole thing was pretty boring. And that's still what I think, except that it's likely the whole thing was a big hoax; as the link below suggests.

I did but it was back in the early 80s.
