the earlier you start the better. Try gentle clicker training--get a copy of one of the books on clicker training that comes with a clicker. Get lots of treats, give them the command when they "accidentally" do what you tell them, treat and praise. Eventually they'll get the idea. Start with come. Have a treat, move a few feet away, call them "dog's name come" like the house is on fire with great excitement. Praise them when they come and give them a treat. Do this 20 times a day from varying distances. It can take up to 2 years to get a dog "proofed" where they will come every time you call but it is well worth it to have a very obedient pet. Look for classes in your area, they are great fun and your dog is never too old to be a beginner.

There are quite a few trains of thought. The most successful methods use rewards to train them...

I was able to train my dog with some basic stuff in just 2 days. But she's exceptionally smart. Smarter than my kids I think!

There are lots of really good books that can help you there.
But have you tried dog school, or puppy school if your dog is still a baby.
The very best command for naughty dogs, I've found, is a VERY loud and firm NO!!!!!. and then repeat the commands until successfully accomplished and lots of praise, and a reward.
No hitting, or yelling with lots of words, this just confuses the dog, rewards and lots of love, get you there very quickly, while punishment and anger will just make a very nervous and unpredictable dog.....
Sorry if this is a bit rambly, I tend to rabbit on a bit, but good luck with your dog, with lots of love and cuddles, a dog is very eager to please you and will learn fast.....

Hi Pauline! to train a dog you must teach it to be disciplined.
Always give it love while training it so that it'll be easier for it to remember the things you teach it

There are many dog training sessions you can take your dog to. check your local YMCA or go online and find the nearest to you. You could ask your vet if they know of one. I took my german shephard to one at the YMCA and loved it........you should start at an early age but it is never too late to train a dog.. GO TO DOG CHANNEL.COM

Watch The Dog Whisperer. Research it because you can really screw it up. Basically you have to be the boss, but you can't do that by hitting it either, violence doen't solve things for people and it doesn't solve things for animals either.
