I'm sick of people thinking that there are wonder drugs out there who will cure everything. And of people who demand perscriptions for things that can be cured with a little rest and a bowl of soup. Do you think we will ever find a way to stop people from taking medications they do not need? (Note: Nothing against people who actually need their medications, so please don't comment on that.)

I whole heartedly agree with you! Part of the problem is that doctors hand them out like they're candy. My mother is on 14 different medications and she is pretty young with moderate health problems. I know she needs some of them, but the rest are just to treat the side effects from all the others. It's crazy!

I actually went in for an annual check up and my doc heard me cough (allergies and a wildfire not far from here) and asked if I wanted a round of antibiotics and some cough syrup. I declined both, but not before he could give me a "sample" of some inhaler and allergy medications. WOW! I tossed them in the trash, came home and had a cup of tea with some local raw honey and wondered what the heck all those chemicals would have done to me. Scary!

I think the key is education and better access to natural remedies. Unfortunately, ours has become an instant gratification society and everyone wants to feel better NOW, not 2 days from now. I think we need more herbalists/holistic health and alternative medicine practitioners like accupressure, massage, etc. for the more mundane problems. (Obviously not for say, cancer or anything...)

No people are ridiculously dependant, I dont know why but it is a huge problem and the waiting rooms in the ER in Canada are filled with idiotic people who have a freakin cold and want some drugs...it makes the waiting times insane because they have to weed these people out. I really dont agree with people going to the doctor for evey single thing and it doesnt help that they now have commercials on TV advertising drugs and offering free samples...stupid!! More and more people are self diagnosing and they think they need medication for everything!! I really dont think it will end anytime soon until people start dying because of over medicatiopn and society starts going back to simple herbal remedies for some non life threatening things. Personally I dont take much drugs at all....heck I learned how to beat Tonsilitis at home with echinacea and raspberry tea!! I get it every year but I can overcome it without penecillin and in fact I found penicillin didnt even cure it as well as natural medicine. People need to chill out on the drugs or they arent going to work anymore after becoming accustomed and resistant to all the meds out there...

Pharmaceuticals are big business. All they have to do is keep perpetrating the idea that "normal" people never have bad days, never get sick, never feel sad, etc. and they can sell any pill to make *real life* go away. Soon, the plan will be to medicate all school age children even against their parents' wishes, but most won't protest because somehow it's now abnormal to have a child who won't sit still. Pretty soon we will be a nation of Stepford Wives and Stepford Children and the AMA Executives and pill pushing doctors can laugh all the way to the bank.

No, prescription drugs can often be a crutch for some. Granted, there are those people who truly need the drugs to maintain some sort of balance.
