Assess whether you or your child actually has lice. Symptoms include itching, swollen glands in the back of the neck, foul-smelling hair, and small, oval white or gray-white spots stuck to the hair shaft.

2. Check for live lice and nits. Work in strong light and section the hair. Use a fine-tooth comb (a pet flea comb works well) to find the insects and to comb them out if possible; or remove them using tweezers, your finger-nails, or a piece of tape wrapped around your finger, sticky side up. Adult lice are reddish-brown; nits are white or clear and adhere to the hair shaft. They do not jump or fly.

3. Check everyone in the household. Lice are very contagious.

4. Wash all bedding, recently used towels and recently worn clothing in hot water, and dry them in a hot dryer. Soak all combs and brushes in hot water for at least 10 minutes.

5. Treat eyelashes and eyebrows with a thick layer of petroleum jelly. Apply twice a day for eight days. Never use any chemical treatment on eyelashes or eyebrows.

6. Try using olive oil or mayonnaise on the head. There is some evidence that it works by smothering the nits. Massage it into the hair and leave it in as long as possible. Manually comb out the nits after the olive oil or mayonnaise application.

7. Use a blow dryer, as heat can kill lice and nits. But exercise caution'avoid placing the dryer too close to the scalp.

8. Examine the hair daily to make sure that all nits and lice are gone. If you see more nits, it may mean that there are still lice in the hair or that re-infestation has occurred.

9. Report the presence of lice to your child's school so the staff or faculty can check for an outbreak. Children with a lice infection should be kept home from school. They can return after the lice have been removed or have been treated with a commercial product.

10. Check with your pharmacist to make sure that any product you plan to use does not contain lindane. The National Pediculosis Association strongly advises against using lindane because it has been associated with a number of serious medical conditions, including seizures and possibly cancer.

Tips:
If you don't have access to a washer and dryer, isolate the infected clothes and bedding in a garbage bag for two weeks. The lice will die in this time period.

Avoid sharing hats, bicycle helmets, combs, brushes and clothing with anyone who may have lice. If you have lice, do not allow anyone to use your personal items.

Manual removal with a comb is the safest and often the most effective method of controlling lice.

Your doctor can prescribe a shampoo or cream that will kill lice or nits.

Never use a lice treatment on a baby unless directed by your doctor.

My daughter had lice a few years back and I found that none of the commercial products worked. My doctor recommended that I cover her head with mayonnaise and then cover it with a shower cap for 4-5 hours. A bunch of her friends who also had lice got together and we had a picture party where we took pictures of them with their mayonnaise hair. We washed it out and all of the lice were gone. It made her hair very silky, also.

Nits are the eggs of head lice. Get advice from the dispensing chemist at Boots as to what preparation is best. At the same time buy a small tooth comb (this is specially made for nits) Comb the hair regularly every day with the small tooth comb, ensuring that you start combing from the scalp. This will comb out the nits and lice as they hatch and eventually the head will be clear of infestation. Good luck.

Buy some tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner from the supermarket (own brand, it's expensive from a health shop) also a bottle of concentrated tea tree oil (from a good chemist or Boots). Wash hair in shampoo and then put a large dollop of conditioner in your hand and mix in 5-6 drops of the tea tree oil. Mix well and then spread onto hair, comb through and leave for about 10-15 mins. Then section by section go through the hair with a nit comb. Time consuming but it works. Do this every time you wash the hair. Also put some water into a spray bottle with some drops of tea tree oil (enough so that you can smell the oil) and spray on the hair every morning before you style and leave the house.
My daughter whilst at school had thick long hair down to her bottom and this is the method I used to use all the time. Whilst her mates had the dreaded things she never did.
Good luck

My son has very short hair and hasnt had them yet touch wood but I have been using tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner which has been marvelous. Some of the little girls in his class now uses this stuff and they havent come back. You can also rub a little bit of neat tea tree oil behind your daughters ears and in their hair line to prevent them as prevention is better than a cure so they say!! To actually get rid of the nits and eggs wash your daughters hair again with the tea tree shampoo, put on the conditioner and comb through with a nit comb from the chemist and the little blighters will come straight out. The shampoo and conditioner I uses id £1.49 from Morrisons supermarket but you can get in in most supermarkets. The oil is about £7.99 from the chemist but lasts ages. You can also use it on bites or to prevent bites. My mum used to use this technique on my sister and I and it was more sucessful thand those chemical treaments and we are in our late twenties now!!

Forget those pharmacy treatments, they don't work. My suggestion would be lots and lots of conditioner, basically smoother the hair and scalp in it and leave it in, then comb with nit comb from root to ends, as much as possible and then rinse out later in the day. You can do this for several days in a row and it should take care of the nits. Good luck.

Use plenty of conditioner and a fine-tooth comb. Ask your G.P. or pharmacist what the best product for your area is. The lice become immune to the various treatments and some brands work better than others depending on where you live. I would cut their hair if it persists, now its the school holidays it will have a chance to grow back before term time. Good luck.

wash hair, then use double the usual amount of conditioner, brush/comb it through to get rid of tangles, whilst sopping wet...use a nit comb and wipe it off everytime onto tissue, then rinse conditioner off, and go through with nit comb AGAIN, do it EVERY morning, wash pillow cases each day. pour boiling water over all the brushes they use, and keep long hair tied into a plait.
....use hair gel whilst still damp before you plait it...when dry, spritz with hairspray, it chokes them, or use a leave in conditioner instead of gel, they cant attach the cement that keep the eggs in place
its the only sure fire way, they are immune to the lotions, and they dont work! just KEEP doing it over a week or for however long they have them then KEEP doing this at least once a week for prevention.

The eggs are quite sticky so one of those nit combs work well. Ask your pharmacist for one.
