You are going to have to trace his records. A person does not have to go to court to change their name so there may not be any record of that anywhere. Since I changed my name and did it by the usage method I'd say the best way would be to trace his social security number if it is possible. For example, my original name was linked to my SSN and then I changed my name on my SS Card along with all other pertinent documents like my driver's license, insurance records, bank statements, etc. For you, you may be able to trace where he did his banking and he would have had the same account number but all of a sudden the name changed. Or, trace the SSN like I said before.

Not so hard. Everything you need is public record, so the search may be tedious, but won't be hard to find.

Here's the process of legally changing your name (which will help you understand how to do the research).

John Eewdellerkerlowsky wants to change his name to John Dell. He files a petition with the court, noting his given name, place of birth, date of birth, SSN, parents' names, etc. Then he has to file a notice in the largest local newspaper in the town where he resides and have it run a specified number of days noting that he has petitioned to change his name. After satisfying that (which is in place so that potential creditors are made aware of the contemplated change) then he goes to court and makes his case. Usually the judge will approve the name change as long as the petition and then new name are reasonable.

Once that is accomplished, a notice is sent to the State Department of Vital Records (name varies a little from state to state, but this is what you're looking for) in the state where the petitioner was born. That agency then amends the birth certificate on file, noting somewhere on the record the name of the court that made the order to change the name and the docket number of the case. A new birth certificate is delivered to the petitioner. Also, a copy of the order is forwarded to the office of the County Clerk in the county of the petitioner's birth so that the original birth certificate is similarly amended.

So what this means to you is that you need to have the following information to find your dad's original name:

His name at the time of his death.
His date of birth.
His place of birth (at the very least the state).

Order a copy of his death certificate, as it likely lists his parents on there to start with, but also because it will give much of the info you need.

Then order a copy of his birth certificate, sending a photocopy of his death certificate and a letter notifying the state that you are a legal heir of your father (required under privacy laws in many states).

Once you get the birth certificate, track down the court that ordered the change and request a copy of the petition that your dad filed.

Lastly, go to the newspaper archives at the library in the town where he lived when the petition was filed and you can find out what he publicized.

Hope this helps. Like I said, tedious, but not hard.

OK....ran into a similar problem with a relative of mine (aunt) anyway ...here is what I did...I went to the school she attended. They were very helpful in giving me as much info as they had , from there I went to the court house with what I had obtained from the school , I also hit the health department, and hall of records at the clerk of courts. All the people were very helpful once I was able to give them a name (which I got at the school she attended. So I would go the school your Dad attended and start there and try that. Also if there are any relatives on his side at all still living hit them up...ask to search their old bibles if they have them for information. Tell them you need it for a family tree your working on...do not let them know you want to find out your Dads original last name...(they may not let you see it if there is some dark family secret as to why he changed it) say you want to get marriage dates and birth dates out of it..alot of the older family bibles have those dates in them..... use your own judgment..and good luck......

If you know where he was born send for the birth certificate. Give them all the information you have like date of birth, place, his parents first name if you know it.. explain that he legally changed his surname and you want the original birth record under the original name.

Looking up any official documents won't work. When a person legally changes their name, those records are changed, too. You have to find something that was published before he changed his name, like a high school yearbook. Perhaps old newspapers from his childhood or teen years, or perhaps a trip to his hometown would be in order. I hope this helps.

If your father is deceased or not forthcoming about his original name, you can look it up yourself. Do you know what county he was born in? Go to the courthouse and look up his birth certificate.
They normally charge a small fee.

How about the high school he attended? Do you know in which year he graduated? Go to the school and check out that year's yearbook.

If you for sure know his birth date, and place of birth - try www. ancestry.com
From here try all possible combinations (I guess the first name remained the same)
