People spend a lot of money on weddings (and funerals too, for that matter). Naturally, there will be commercial minded folks with schemes to get some of that money for themselves. A whole "Wedding Industry" (and Funeral Industry) has sprung up to encourage people to buy, buy, buy as the "proper" way to get through these important events.

It really doesn't - although I'm sorry that it's been your experience. I mean, I've seen people and heard about people whose weddings were really impersonal and seemed like a big ploy to get gifts but I can assure you they're not all like that.
Just approach your wedding and your marriage with the mentality that this is a day for you and your fiancee, try to make things as personal as possible and if there are aspects of getting married that you find commercial - just try to avoid them if you can. I think most of them you can avoid. Good luck!

Not mine. We are getting married at Natural Bridge on the deck of the cabin where we will also be honeymooning. All together wedding and honeymoon and rings we are spending LESS than $1,000. That includes everything, right down to the honeymoon shirts I had made!

Because it has created a huge industry. Big money.
But you can have whatever kind of wedding that you want.
Why not at the beach and people bring their own chair or blanket to sit on and then have a potfluck. You can make your own cake. Have a few friends take pictures.
We have choices to make it comercial or not

She's right, I'm getting married in Forest Park (STL) in a couple of months to a girl who was raised Catholic. We ordainded a friend of ours online and I wrote the ceremony. It's still a large, somewhat traditional wedding but we made it our own. Just don't be a pansy and do what makes you and your significant other happy.

It is so commercial because people allow it to be so commercial. Weddings should be about the joining of two families not about who can spend the most money on invitaions (which end up getting thrown away).

It doesn't. Each couple can find what works for them. Simple gathering in a living room married by a friend who gets ordained online, bunch of friends in the woods... there are thousands of possibilities.

It doesn't have to. Find something that you two like and roll with it. If you like nature, then find a romatic spot in the outdoors that the two of you love. If you like the beach, then do it on the beach. Have the wedding where you two love. It is your special day and do what you two want, because if you don't you will regret it. Trust me
