i go our running most days and go thro our local park. there is a man who takes his dog there as well and is allowed to run riot, it chases and tries to bite most people from kids, to cyclists, to women pushing prams. it sneeked up behind me whilst jogging and gave me a sharp bite to the calf, which although hurt did not break the skin. i made off after it and managed to give it a sharp kick to the testicles, the owner didn't seem bothered. i think everyone should take this action, then at least the mutt will not be able to reproduce

have just been looking at some of the answers, i'm amazed how alot of you hold dogs in higher esteem than a human being, it's alright to kick a person but i'm not allowed to defend myself against a dog. you're "barking" mad the lot of you!

I probably would have done the same thing if it had happened to me too.
I also think you should have called the police to report what happened and that the dog owning idiot let his dog run at will in a public park and you would like to file a formal complaint against that idiot but make sure your tell the police what you stated here just in case the dog owning idiot tells his own version. Whenever you go back to that park and is you see any of the others who know about that mean dog go up and ask their names and tell the police that information too.
The more people you can get to tell the police about that dog and his owner who doesn't give a damn what his dog does will help your case and hopefully something good will come out of this for all who visit that park, know what I mean?
Maybe you should also carry something along when you visit any park just in case that dog or any other dogs try that again.
Try carrying a small bottle of ammonia mixed with just a bit of water and set the sprayer for stream and not spray. Then just blast the hell at any dog who tries to bite or even after a bite and this way you can make sure that dog doesn't try it again.
Works for me every time a dog chases me and I turn right before the bite and blast away but, make sure to report what happened to the police now.

HELL NO-WHAT THE F*** WERE YOU THINKING WHEN YOU KICKED THE DOG???????????
all you need to do is speak to the owner and alert him as to what his dog is doing when off the lead in the park. You could suggest that he either keeps the dog on a long leash, or puts a muzzle on the dog so that it cannot bite anyone. But whatever you do, DO NOT KICK THE DOG AS THIS WILL ANGER IT FURTHER AND NEXT TIME YOU MIGHT NOT BE SO LUCKY. Think, dogs have feelings too and you wouldn't be pleased if someone came and kicked you where it hurt for no apparent reason now would you?

Well, I wouldn't chase after the dog intent on revenge, but if it comes to a situation where you simply need to defend yourself from the dog in question, then kick it to make it go away. I'd bring a super soaker along, and if the dog tries to come near you, simply spray it with water. I promise it won't get worked up and attack, you may have to spray it a few times to make it go away, but then you can have an easy concious and get rid of the annoying dog.
If the dog persists in bothering you or other people in the park, spray it at the dog's owner. Remind him that it is his LEGAL responsibility to keep his dog under control. If the problem continues, alert the RSPCA or the police. Dangerous animals can be a real threat to small children, and if push comes to shove it might be better if it was put down.

The main culprit here is the dog owner who allowed his dog to roam and chase people.
Chasing running objects comes natural to dogs, does not matter what object. It is the owner who should hold his dog on lead as long as there are people and kids around.
Kicking the dog was not a good thing to do especially if the dog will not understand why you kicked it.
My own dogs run after me every time I go out for a run myself.
Dogs got 85% of our brain cells, which meant that they have the same feeling of pain as we do.
I would rather make friends with the dogs. They will not bite me and will naturally chase me as a play.
I was able to do this very thing where I take my dogs for a walk. I pat the other dog’s backs; I learnt their names and bribe them with a biscuit. Once I enter the park, I am faced with 20 dogs waiting to greet me and expect their biscuit, and often follow me all the time.
Believe or not, pigeons do very much the same thing.
Animals & birds are very noble and do not know betrayal like us. Offer them kindness; you will be rewarded for a long time. Also they do not forget faces.

When I read the beginning of your statement, I thought who is this A hole kicking dogs?
YOU ARE RIGHT..and need to speak with the stupid owner. If he is aware of the dogs behaviour then he is (actually he is, no matter what) looking at a big law suit and a dead dog. If he bites a child or harms anything, it, now, is sort of on you, too.!!!
(SORRY) You are responsible for talking to the owner, I suggest that you (put it in a letter and hand it to him so as not to loose it by talking with him) tell him about his dogs behaviour and that his actions (The dogs') could get him put down. That you don't want to see that happen or someone get really hurt, and you know what, dude? Tell him that you resent the fact he has now made it your problem as well. I don't like to see dogs on leashes, but real is real Good Luck

Don't be so god damn cruel. If you're going to kick someone, kick the owner. He/she is responsible and therefore should take control of the dog. It shouldn't be off it's lead if it's so bad. Perhaps advise the police, RSPCA, or whoever handles dangerous animals in your area. The owner shouldn't even have a pet if it can't take care of it properly and the proper way to fix the problem is to go through the correct channels. If not, don't kick the dog, take a different route.

You should have run up and kicked the owner of the dog in the balls instead,, and yes,, you should feel bad for kicking the dog.
The dog isn't really to blame, if the owner lets it get away with doing such things then the dog doesn't know it's done wrong but the owner does. Kick him square in the nuts.

Yeah, dogs are stupid, annoying pests. My neighbor's brain-damaged dog barks and howls at EVERYTHING and ANYTHING 24 hours a day, everyday. When I take our the trash, it barks and growls. When a bird flies by it howls uncontrollably. The stupid mutt even barks non-stop at 3am. I have to sleep with earplugs in and a fan in an attempt to drown out the incessant noise. I want to drop kick the miserable animal into the next county.
Now granted, kicking a dog for no reason is just mean...but when they are dangerous pests, give 'em a whack.

You are an idiot! Its an animal!! Why would you expect it to behave any other way? You should have called the local authorities such as police or animal control. Obviously the problem needs to be addressed appropriately. Yes, you should feel bad for kicking a dog when it had its back toward you. Did it solve the problem!?

you should have reported the owner to the police for having a uncontrolable dog off the lead in a public place, its the owners responsibility to keep that dog under control.
the dog probably won't be bothering you again as he knows what to expect the next time.
