AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!! You just brought up a bad memory. I worked with a woman JUST like that, and since by nature, I tend to be a good listener, she would track me down to complain about EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY!! Got to where she would sit in her car and wait for me in the morning and so that is how my workday started, on a negative note!! Let me tell you how much I started to REALLY dread going to work to be met by that first thing! . I finally got to the point that I just ignored her unless it was about a work related issue. Maybe not the most mature way of handling the situation, but HEY it finally worked. GOOD LUCK!! These people can really change the whole atmosphere of the work environment!!

I used to work with a teacher like that and like you I was really prepared to dismiss her as a horrible person not worthy of bothering with!
However I spoke to a therapist about this and she advised taking time to build a relationship with this person, discovering what made her "tick" and gaining her trust.
I found out that she had just got into the habit of negative behaviour. Because I had her trust I was eventually able to challenge all her negative comments and encouraged everyone else to do the same.
She stopped being so awful and actually turned out to be ok.
Just go for it

People like her are just talking, don't worry she's harmless, she's just got the false impression that she knows a lot. My guess is that she's older than you.
Tell her with emphasis (very important) that she's miserable and rude and you don't care for her opinion about the world and the people. I'm sure after that she'll shut the **** up for good.
Don't avoid her, face her and admonish her, put your self in charge of the situation and end it.

Be nothing less then a kind and caring person. Show her the right way to be. If it doesn't change her, then it will make her angry. People who can not change can never stand it when someone is opposite of the reaction they normally get.

Don't lower yourself to her level - just rise above it by simply staying away from her as much as possible. Don't pay her any attention and just stick to work topics. Negativity can spread like wild fire, so please careful to not buy into her negative propaganda - she has issues that have nothing to do with you.
I work with someone who complains about EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING, so I just keep the conversation short and sweet and pop my Ipod earbuds in when I can - and voila - the negativity melts away instantly.

Only ask her questions about herself, she is obviously unfullfilled and needs to talk her way out of the negativity. If thats too much to ask, just tell her she is too negative. Honesty may be what she thinks she has, so give her some more.

Always tell her the positive side of her complaint. Or say something like, "I bet that would really bother starving kids in Africa." Negative people hate to hear the positive side of things or that their life really isn't as bad as they think it is, so eventually she will stop whining to you.

Just stay away from her.
Those kind of people pull you down and make you have a bad day.
Go to your supervisor.
That's what i did and the problem got resolved.
