Not to be a smart***, but as long as it takes. My Yorkie stayed in the crate while I worked until he was about 8 months old. From there, I left the crate open during the day, confined to one room, and many times I would come home and he would be lying in there on his own. Until I really trusted him, I would keep him in a doggie diaper while I had him free in the house. He soiled the diaper one or two times and didn't like the way it felt so that helped in his potty training. It also saves the floors of your home.

My dog is a year old, I have used a crate with her since day 1. She sleeps in it and when she has to be unattended in the house, like when its too hot for her to stay outside and I need to run an errand then she goes in the crate. She will retreat to the crate during the day as well. It is her safe place. She really likes it. But also, it has never been use as a punishment tool. Its large enough for her to sprawl so its pretty big. I covered it with a nice fabric (one that matches the decor) threw a few pillows on top of it and you would never really know it is there. Also camouflaged it with a large plant. I recommend you keep the crate if the dog likes it..

Mine it took 3-5 weeks. They learned quickly. It depends on the dog and the size of the crate you are using. If the crate is only a bit bigger than the puppy, they will want to go outside more to pee instead of having an accident where they sleep. When going to the bathroom where you want them to, as you know, praise them.

Until you are successful. Never use your crate as a sorce of punishment. Never reprimand your puppy and throw it in there. A crate is supposed to be a comforting, safe place. Make sure you keep your puppy on a regular feeding, potty schedule and be consistant. My adult dogs still have crates, I only kept them because they like to sleep in them even though I don't need them anymore.

Depends on the dog. Usually can be anywhere from 2-8 weeks. Once the dog understands that he "goes" outside give him/her a few more days (about 5) and then it's set. If he/she lapses - it's back to the crate.
