The cervix is the narrow canal at the bottom of the uterus with an opening above into the inside of the uterus and an opening below into the birth canal.

To become pregnant, sperm must enter into the cervix and into the uterus, up the fallopian tubes where it meets the egg. So... therefore the cervix is open for this to happen. The cervix forms a "mucus plug" after pregnancy has occurred, to prevent infections from entering in to the uterus and to keep the fetus in, also. If the cervix does not get closed naturally, then miscarriage may occur and this is called an incompetent cervix.

Both! Trust me, you don't want to see the pictures as proof. But you can look it up. The cervix opens twice without pregnancy: Once during ovulation, when the cervical mucus changes and the body is ready to allow sperm. The second time is during menstruation to allow the menstrual fluid (and sometimes a little clotting) out. It doesn't open much, though. Just barely enough to accomplish those tasks. Other than that it's closed tight. During pregnancy, the cervix remains closed. Women who have given birth before might have a very slightly open cervix, but not enough for a doctor to determine it as open. There are also two measurements: the internal and external OS. The internal will remained closed in pregnancy until about midway (sometimes a little sooner, but not much) into the third trimester. The external is what sometimes opens a little in women who have been pregnant before. But the internal OS is what doctors measure for pregnancy.

I believe it is open by about 1 cm. It has to be a little bit open in order to do some of the tests that are done at the doc's office, not to mention to conceive as well. Once you are pregnant, it closes until labor.

If I'm wrong about the measurement, someone correct me.

before it is open but once conception takes place and then implantation, the cervix closes to prevent miscarriage of the fetus.
