Your dog should be fine as long as he has a shelter. The water should keep cool as long as you have it in something bigger than just a little bowl. My dog digs holes to keep cool. I guess the dirt that has just been dug up is cooler than the ground...

They pant because they have no sweat glands, and you have every right to worry about him. Where are you from? It's inhumane to leave a dog outside in any type of extreme weather.
Who watches him? If there is no way to bring him indoors, they could freeze an extra bowl of water that would at least take some time to melt. I hope there's some shade available, and a doghouse would be helpful if it rains. Is there enough room for him to exercise? Does he have toys to play with? Sounds like a lonely life. Do you have any friends who could stop by to check on him?

I don't know if they are as delicate as the English bulldog. My brother and other friends had the Eng. ones and they died fast from the heat here in Texas. My bro kept a kids pool with water and had a fan unit inside the dog house so they would keep cool. Sometimes his wife brought them inside during the hottest part of the day.Their 1st dog was having her 1st litter and was supposed to have 2-4. She had 11 ! So my bro and his wife were really busy selling puppies. The last one that they kept died at abut 5 yrs old. and he was in the shade and had the pool to lay in. Hope your does better.

If you don't trust your caretakers then it's time to find some new caretakers. Dogs will dig a hole, usually under a shady place and lie in it to keep cool. When it's real hot, which is most of the summer in Atlanta Ga, I will take the garden hose, without the sprayer, and just gently run cool water over my Basset until she is totally wet. She LOVES it and it definitely revives her. I will do this about every hour or so until it cools down outside.

As you have not mentioned the breed of your dog,I will answer in General- If the dog is medium sized you can put it in you bath room. With the doors open for air circulation If it is a big dog then you have to create a shanty closed on all 3 sides with gunny sacks and wet them from time to time,in the shade and put a fan to cool it from out side. but make sure that the floor is dry as it might catch Pneumonia .Do give it a lot of fresh water to drink. As the dogs do not have sweat glands they pant and the sweat it out of the mouth as saliva while panting .wishing you all the success in keeping your pet cool this summer

Dogs don't sweat like humans. They cool themselves by panting, drinking water, and cooling major pressure points. Being a pit, his hair should be short enough to cool pressure points if he stretches out. He should have shade. He NEEDS water--even if it isn't cool, he NEEDS water. Another good idea is to freeze water in water bottles or gallons. If you put them out and the dog is hot, he will lay next to it or on it to cool off. If he runs out of water, he will chew it open though and that can be a mess!

pads on a dog's feet are sensitive; Their body heat can be released only through the pads of their feet or through their tongues, which is why dogs pant when they are hot.
make sure he has shade, i like to put ice cubes in my puppy's water dish (along with water of course) so there is always enuff. you can tell how hot they get from feeling their bellies - the hotter it is, the hotter the dog is. make sure he has shade and maybe a damp towel or two he can lay on. Perhaps a molded plastic pool for him also. Shade is the number 1 thing tho. And no matter what make sure he has plenty of water!

Im sorry to hear you keep your dog outside. Pitts are a very people oriented breed and strive on human contact and companionship. I feel very bad for him and only hope he at least has water and shade. You should let him inside to be with his people. You dont even know if he has water... I say he needs a real home. Sorry, he deserves better care than that.

He obviously should have shelter from the sun and plenty of fresh, clean, cold drinking water. The best advice is to let him go inside in the same air conditioning you and your family would enjoy. I don't believe in having a pet if it is only to be kept outside, to me it's a family member. If you are worried about him, bring him in!! It is proven that indoor pets live healthier and happier than strictly outdoor pets.

they pant. it is their way of keeping cool. he needs to have fresh cool water throughout the day and somewhere where he is not in the direct sun. a shade tree and grass work. whoever is taking care of him while you are away needs to take care of him. maybe you need to hire a pet sitter to visit a couple times a day to fill water and check on him. haveing a dog is big responsibility.
