Increase your muscle. Muscles use much more oxygen and thus when you've acquired them your body demands more energy. When it can't get it from food alone it hits the reserves.

From a physician: Aerobic exercise will burn the most fat. Aerobic exercise is the type that raises your heart rate for prolonged periods. Examples are running, jogging or even walking 20-30 minutes a day; swimming; biking; etc.

Lifting lighter weights many times in succession will burn more fat that fewer reps of heavy weights, for the same amount of time.

Why, you might ask? You actually burn most of your energy just sitting around doing nothing at all. That's right - something like 2/3 of your daily energy expenditure occurs through your basal metabolic rate.

Aerobic exercise increases your metabolic rate; and it does so not just for the time you're exercising, but for 14-16 hours afterwards. So if you're walking, running, etc., 20-30 minutes per day, you're spending most of your day at a higher metabolic rate, and thus burning off more energy and likely more fat.
