Most good wines are rated by a point system.
They go up to 100.
If you have found a few wines that you like. Find out what thier points are and stick with that number when trying differend brands.

There is no right answer to this. Merlots vary from region to region, year to year.
You can try California Merlots. Beringer and Dry Creek (among others) make good ones. Oregon and Washington State also produce them, though IMO with lesser quality.
In France, the region growing the same types of grapes is Bordeaux. I can't say I'm an expert there.
Note that Merlot is now very popular, so everyone is getting into the game. It is quite common to find Merlots that are very young with little body - these wineries are just trying to pump Merlot on the market. Be wary of these wines.

There's lots of great Merlot out there...my favorites are Chateau St. Jean, Merryvalle, Joseph Phelps, and if you're looking for a good value wine try Sea Ridge (only sold in Von's), or Forestville.

I highly recommend the RAIMAT Merlot, which is a Spanish wine brand. It is from the Costers del Segre region.
BTW, 2 more things:
1. The right way to type out the brand is --- [ yellow tail ].
2. If you watch the movie "SIDEWAYS", you might want Pinot Noir and say "Anything but Merlot!!" :-)

Didn't you see the movie, "Sideways?" Merlot's suck. They taste like rotting leaves. Try learning about Bordeaux or some other wine that actually tastes good. (Wine drinking is about personal taste.)

You are drinking cheap Merlots.
Try another red.
Australian's are heavy.
You may prefer a Chilean or French wine.
