Boy, I dread flea season. Yes, they are little black pests that jump all over and attack. I have the legs to prove it,....they seem to like people with low b vitamins, and people with a lot of sugar, so my doctor says. He advised getting some insect repellent, and comsuming lot of vitamin B...also, spray really good if they are at your house, I put alchohol on them or witch hazel, and if they are really bad, calamine lotion. I hate them and dread it everyyear. You have to have your house sprayed, and then three weeks later again. so the eggs are killed when the begin to hatch...they can be hard to get rid of...good luck, and hope you don't get any this year.

You would know if there was an infestation going on as you would be getting bit quite a bit. Fleas will usually go for the feet, legs and ankles first(but not exclusively, they're not picky). You'll find small red bumps that itch so bad they about drive you mad. To find out if you have fleas in any room, plug a night light into an outlet and put a good size bowl of water with a few drops of dish soap in it underneath the night light. The light will attract the fleas and as they jump towards it they'll fall into the bowl. The dish soap destroys the surface tension of the water which means that the fleas won't be able to float and maybe get out. They'll just sink to the bottom. This won't work to fight the infestation however, it's only to find out if you got them. As for the cat, the cat would be scratching quite a bit from the bites. When you spread her fur apart with your fingers you may see fleas running and you will find little black specks of dirt(sort of like coffee grounds) in places. That's flea poop; and where there's poop............ Good luck with that. PS: I had an indoor cat for 17 yrs and it NEVER had fleas. It can happen, doesn't have to though.

Nasty little devils. If you have an animal then it needs spraying first, you can buy over the counter remedies or from the vet. Then You will need to spray your carpets etc, and probably again in 7/14 days because thats when the eggs will hatch. The problem with fleas is they can lay dormant in carpets/furniture for a long time, so a good shampoo after the treatment of spraying, is a good idea, and calamine lotion is a good thing for the skin
Hope this helps

Hi,
There are 3 types of fleas that tend to be found in the UK. Cat, Dog and least commonly Human. Cat and dog fleas will only bite the host species (hence the name) and humans. Human fleas are a lot less common than you would think and can be something of a nasty pest.
Fleas will generally only bite lower limbs and exposed flesh, they tend to stop at elasticated bands such as under wear elastic.
Fleas bites are always identifiable by a red dot in the centre of the raised bites. If the red dot is not present check other possibilities.
You can try to control the problem if it is fleas with traps placed around the property, they are attracted to the heat of lights. Chemical treatment may be necessary if the problem has got out of control. If you suspect it is a significant problem I would suggest you try contacting either your local councils pest control department or a professional pest controller.
Hope you find a solution soon,
David

Fleas are small jumpin', black things, and they usually bite around the ankle area. The best way to get rid of them would be to bomb them..you can go to your nearest store and get Flea Bomb in the insect repellant section. Black Flag makes a good one. Good Luck!

you might have scabies - human fleas. Very easy to catch from others. They burrow under the skin where they lay eggs - not visible to the naked eye. You get an all over rash but hot sweaty places especially - groin etc. you can get a cream from pharmacy that works very quickly Unlikely to be animal fleas - they prefer animals but will bite you and when full of blood will fall off - these are visible - a mahogany colour.

Yup, they can be very hard to get out of carpets, the baby fleas are like little tiny maggots and live on the normal dust and dandruff in carpets for months. Spraying, vacuuming and all that is your only hope unless you are willing to get rid of the carpets, and even that is not a guaranty. Any pets should be treated.
The fleas tend to bite mostly on the ankles and legs, but will bite where ever they can reach. They can live in the carpets for many months even with no people or animals to feed on.
One of the reasons I refuse to let animals into my home, period.
I just hate fleas and they can carry diseases!( Like the Plague)

The fleas on animals or in carpets etc are a different type to those humans get.
The ones we would get are usually passed on through contact eg: If you hug someone and your hair touches theirs the fleas just walk across the strands of hair. Also humans(unless you have a really bad dose untreated over a long period) will only be bitten on the scalp.
It is pets fleas which can live in upholstery like carpets and couches which could bite other parts of the body. Pets are treated with a pill or injection from vet to kill the fleas.
The fleas on humans tend to die quickly once they leave the scalp.
Also with a head lice treatment shampoo from the pharmacy or supermarket they are easy to kill, but the eggs (the almost silver coloured things which stick to strands of hair) will not all die from the treatment . You need to use a fine comb to remove them.
Hope this helps
