Flashes of light are a common sign of a possible retinal detachment. When the retina is trying to detach, it pulls on the photoreceptors (rods and cones) and they can confuse this pulling as an electrical signal, thus you see it as light.
Call your optometrist and explain your symptoms to the secretary. They will probably want you to come in soon to get a dilated exam so the doctor can check your retina.
Good luck and please get this checked on NOW - don't wait!

An increase of light flashes may indicate a detaching of the retina. Best to go get your eyes checked.

if you lose sleep and are chronically sleep deprived you will get chemicals in your eyes that release during waking time that normally are released during dreaming. they look like light patterns or sparkles. maybe you are not sleeping well or waking up a lot during the night.

i suggest you go see an optometrist. it could be because your retina is damaged or has small holes. do you also see "floaters" or small flecks that pass through your field of view? they can use a laser to fix your eyes. you gotta use them the rest of your life- go and see a doctor.
