To go for the scientific definitions, dreams in general have a few explanations.

First, there's the case that dreams either help us remember or to not remember things. As in, they're a sort of mental filing system for the retention of or discarding of data. So maybe there's something about the nightmare that is particuarly important or unimportant.

Secondly, there's the random particle theory, in that your mind fires off electrical impulses in sleep, and your dreams are simply interpreting these random signals in ways that match "expected" perceptions of your world. When I say expected, I mean your dreams are typically combinations of components you've experience; I once had a dream about running down a hill being followed by a huge roll of duct tape, so it's not like it's an accurate representation.

Many people describe their diet affecting their dreams: this means that the type of nutrients you intake can affect the stream and intensity of the electrical particles being fired off. Theoretically, this would imply that the more randomized and extreme the particles are, the more likely things are going to be deemed as non-pleasent. Perhaps the mind expects high impact events to be scary. Of course sometimes, you just have effects that are weird: perhaps the brain isn't capable of interpreting the events in a way that makes sense.

It's pretty much impossible to PROVE how dreams work and function, but we can continue to gather evidence in support of one way or another. In general, your thoughts while awake are directly correlated to your thoughts while asleep, but that doesn't mean things you haven't thought about for years won't come up.

Nightmares are usually a sign of something you are going through or will go through. Like for example surrounded by vampires could mean that you are under attack either spiritually or physically. Usually the dreamer with prayer interprets the dream or nightmare.

While there is no "Solid" proof on the origins of dreams, I would say it's scientific. When we sleep our minds are most likely taking in all the information from the day. Though those "Deja Vu" dreams where you dream something, then it happens a few weeks later kind of get me wondering...

nightmares are just something your mind might have been thinking about when you fall asleep. your brain is working out things in your sleep and it could be working out some unsolved problem that has been in the back of your mind forever. you just forgot about it. or mab God wants you to remember that certain event for a reason. it works both ways.

I have dreamed a lot.

I think that they can be your subconcious state, SOMETIMES.

I think that they can also be spiritual/psychic phenomenon.

I think that they can be triggered by chemical reactions that release in your brain, SOMETIMES.

You just have to react to what you can. And try to figure them out. People like me that are saved know that if they can't figure it out, God already knows. If He wants, He will remind you or tell you.

Joseph said it this way:
Genesis 40:8 And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.
