Most children, from average homes where there is not rampant neglect, or overt abuse, respect and love their parents because they, themselves feel respected, and loved, in return. Although material stuff is nice (gifts, allowances, etc), it doesn't make for a happy home, or well-adjusted child-parent relationship. (This explains the problems in homes where the parents are wealthy, and indulgent, but garner no love or respect from the children.) All human beings, no matter their age, or station in life, want to be loved, respected, and accepted.

My parents taught me the meaning of a good education, the value of a dollar, an honest days work for an honest days pay, and the fact that a holiday is more than presents, it's the family and friends around the table to help you celebrate that special day. For this, I will always be thankful and grateful.

Your question assumes that parents buy things to win your respect and love. That might not be in the case in a lot of families who do not practise such acts so its really tough to answer.

Yes. My mother raised us to understand that while receiving presents is good, material things are not the most important thing in life. I love my mother for being an example to my sisters and I - she is a kind, nice, giving, unselfish, loving woman.

I respect and love my mother for who she is. She never buys me stuff. I respect my father because he is my father and he brought me life... he never buys me anything either... not even a peanut... However I am thankful that he still offers me a shelter and strong meal of the day...

I love and respect my parents always. I'm still alive and heathly with no mental problems. So I think they did a great job.

Yes, money isn't everything. Genuine love feels better, it can't talk 2 u when ur sad or help u up when u fall down.

Of course. Actually, since I turned 16 I have refused to accept anything from them. They can't buy my love. Material items do not represent love.

Very much so.
We never had much money when I was a kid and they did the best for me and my brother always.
Now they are older and still dont have much money but I help them when I can. I just wish I had more money so that they could just live comfortably without still having to work.
