Dogs can really only hear (understand) two (2) syllable. So, avoid long names.
After a soft consonant, use a strong vowels.
Examples:

The letter " f " is a soft consonant. An " e " to follow in the dog's name is not ideal, however an " a " would be well heard by the dog.
To the reverse, a strong consonant like an " r " can be followed by a soft vowel.
Don't be shy about doubling up on sounds: Kiki, Bobo, Yoyo...
Be careful with sounds that can't be heard.
Choose a name adapted to your dog taking into account its size, sex, character.

Spike - what a surprise that would be!
Don't call him any "people" names, that can backfire. My neighbor did that, named her little poodle "Charlie". My dad's name was also Charlie. He was sitting on her front porch talking with her when the dog started to dig (out of sight of other neighbors) and she yelled at the top of her voice not thinking - "stop it Charlie, stop it!" My dad never went over there to sit on the porch and talk again!
Buster, Buttons, Happy Dog (Hap for short), Scooter, or Scrappy are cute as well.

You should wait until you get your dog and check out his personality. There are lots of cute small dogs at every shelter. You should look into adopting.

My dog's name is William. I think that human names for dogs are cute. Maybe Joey, Steven or Michael. Sounds dumb, but alot of people like it.
