contact Animal Control. Chanses are, the dog's owner will look there first.

I agree with brandyniz. Just look in your local phone book and call animal control. Chances are you'll ring into the local police department. I had this experience just today. A teenager across the street came over asking if I recognized a shaggy little dog that showed up at her door -- probably after hearing her dogs bark. She was a friendly little pup, obviously a pet, but I suspect she had been abandoned. She had a collar but no tags and she didn't seem to be familiar with her surroundings. Unfortunately, neither of us could keep her, and it was very hot out today. At least we know she'll be taken care of and maybe her owner will come looking for her. If not, she'll be put up for adoption. She's a very sweet little dog and I feel confident she'll find a good home. Wish I could have kept her.

wow...it's a good luck actually.(superstition)
The owner might be from around. There must be a place, where lost animals can be reported. If not, so put some pics, or just simply information in some shops, or on the street. If you have a local radio station, call them (i did, and it worked).
If you have time, and your brother remembers from where the dog started following, go there for a walk with the dog, he might guide you to his home.
I hope that helps.
If you can't find the owner, then see it as a very, very lucky sign from God. And keep the dog.

you can post "found" articles in the paper and posters around the neighbrohood that the dog started following from and see if anything happens and if nothing has happened within about 2-3 weeks then you can either keep the dog or take it to the animal shelter good luck

Check to see if the dog has a collar with tags on it. Phone the animal control to let them know that you have the dog, or take the dog to the animal control to see if the dog has been microchipped. Put flyers up.

If you're able to, take care of the dog for the time being until you see or hear about someone who has lost the dog. I'm sure they will come up in time. If not, you can keep it or give it to someone else who wants one!

You could always trade your brother for the dog...j/k
Ask your brother where the dog started following him, so you have an idea on where to start asking people or post signs in that area. Or you can go to your local vet - he/she might have know whose dog it is.....Good luck & keep your brother...I was just kidding.

Let the local Animal Control Officer "stress" over it. Which brings me to this...why are you stressed over a dog following your kid home?
In the meantime, feed it and give it water.

Build him a nice dog house and feed him steak, if the old owner comes around and claims him you can be sure he will always come around to visit, make him part of your family. And for now call him Lucky.
