When a flood of people come across the border who are not skilled and are uneducated, you better believe it hurts the US economy. Have you noticed any sort of raise in minimum wage in the last 10 years? Or an increase in benefits? No increase in benefits! And the min wage always been 5.75 and there is a good reason for that and you know it, lots of people are willing to work for that wage and the majority of those people are illegal. This stagnant wage/salary keeps all wages and salaries stagnant, even if you are not working for minimum wage. This is where it hurts US economy-- people are not willing to spend as much if they're not getting enough money to do so. With the increase in costs of gas and utilities people do not have much "fun money" that they can spend on restaurants and US entertainment. The gas and utility money ultimately goes to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and all those other countries (bye money!) and the decreased money that is left is spent on cheap food and necessities that come from China because we cannot afford American products (bye money!). Not to mention the money the illegals earn go back to Mexico or Honduras or wherever. This is how it hurts the US economy.

Everyone who says that the economy is not hurt is in denial.

There are two kinds of immigration to keep in mind. I believe you are referring to illegal immigration which not only is a crime but is definitely hurting the economy. It is draining an already strained health care system and education system. The greatest problem is the cost of jobs to those in the building trades. If you knew how much money is sent out of this country via western union to Mexico it would blow your mind. Much of this is untaxed wages and money that would have been spent in the USA if earned by a legal taxpaying American.

Only illegal immigration. Our legal immigration policy, like that of most countries in the world, is slanted to bring in more skilled than unskilled people. Legal immigration has been a clear economic benefit and I assume will remain so as long as that slant is maintained. Legal immigrants also have a lower crime rate per capita than do our native population, presumably because they are screened by the FBI before they are allowed to come.

Illegal immigration is clearly bad for the economy, since it is primarily of poor people. Poor people don't cover more than a small fraction of their own costs and the costs of their families, even if they pay all taxes. In addition, due to the lack of screening, diseases we had eradicated and stopped vaccinating for are back. Also, the crime rate of illegals is hugely disproportionate to their numbers.

Illegal immigration certainly hurts us. The tax base erodes when a large number of workers are paid tax free and don't pay income taxes or SSN. Someone has to pay those taxes, and it's not the rich!

On the other side, the costs go up to educate thier children, many of whom need bilingual education, so it costs more to educate them than it does for english speaking kids. It also costs more to treat uninsured illegals in the ER than it does to treat persons with insurance who can go to a clinic. Also, it puts a strain on the welfare system, since they can get welfare benefits for thier children born here.

Then you have the problem of dragging down the over all wage rate. The poor are making less money due to the availibilty of cheaper labor, the middle class are paying a higher percentage of the tax burden so they are poorer too, and the rich employers of the illegals are putting extra money in thier pockets.

It wouldn't hurt me a bit to see rich people having to take care of thier own kids, mow thier own lawns and clean thier own McMansions. I'd much rather have that than have the US turn into Mexico.

Of course not. If immigrants are taken away from this country for 1 day then did you know that it hurts the U.S in major way..way that it can't funtion.

And secondly, immigrants do jobs that Americans will not do.

Yes, but I think they also help the economy. Perhaps the reason the government doesn't truly do anything is because Corporations and Farmers are relying heavily on the illegals to keep their costs down in turn keeping the cost on the consumer down. (Oil companies obviously excluded).

Immigration has never hurt the U.S. economy. Overall, it has always helped it. Read a book.
