Not so fond of chi......they are yappy little dogs. I, however, have 2 yorkies and i would recommend highly!!! They love to be pampered and held and carried around and dressed up in clothes and bows...or at least mine do. they also demand lots of love and attention....mine are potty pad trained....they do required a lot more grooming than a chi does, but it is so worth it when you see them prancing around in clothes and ponytails and bows!!! Sorry to carry on and on about them, they are just my babies and i wouldn't trade them for the world.....good luck on your decision about a chihuahua!!

Chihuahuas are the best. They are the ultimate lap dog, wanting only to be by your side and in your heart. They eat very little because of their small size. Most chis are a very healthy breed, but be sure to check out your breeder well. Breed standard is not over 6 lb, but I have seen ourebred chis over 10. They wear clothes well if you get them started at an early age. They can do well with cats if introduced to them at an early age. They will use the bathroom more often than large dogs because they are small and cannot hold it as long. However they can be trained to use a litterbox, or do well with puppy pads. I use baby crib pads with mine. Like I said, ultimate lap dog. The need, demad lots of attention, love going places with you. They also should be free fed, where the food is left out all the time, because they are prone to low blood sugar.

The long coat chis require more grooming. They are very loyal to their family. As with all puppies they pee/poop alot. They do not eat alot and should not be overfed. Mine is 3 yrs old and feed him in the morning & at dinner time (puppies are different though)...this way I know when he has to poop. They can be trained to go out and use puppy pads...mine uses both(doesn't like rain/cold weather) You really need to check the breeder out extremely well, there are so many BYB out there, and although these puppies are cute they are being bred with genetic problems which are extremely costly. PLEASE PLEASE if you do decide to get one from a breeder the pup should stay with mom and siblings for at least 10-12 weeks. They learn/need that. Have you considered adopting a rescue?? Petfinder.com is a great place to check out. They have puppies and adults if interested. Chi's are very social IF brought up that way. Mine is not a yapper, you must train them...they are alot of work as with any puppy/dog. Be expected to devote alot of time and patience to this little guy/gal. I highly recommend the book "Chihuahuas for Dummies" BEFORE you get your chi. Also Yahoo has "groups" There is a Chi group online thru Yahoo that you could join. You will learn ALOT of important info on health and taking care of your chi. Good Luck. Sorry for writting a book! They LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to cuddle and be the center of attention!!

Be very careful when getting a chihuahua, as MANY (not all) of them are fear-biters. When you go to a breeder (do NOT get them from pet stores, most are puppy-milled because of their popularity) make sure the parents are nice friendly handleable dogs. Other than that, treat them like any other breed of dog, and make SURE they get LOTS of socializaton so they do not grow up to bite. I'm not prejudiced towards chihuahuas, but I have worked in a vet hospital for almost all my life and I've only known a handful of chihuahua's that I would trust not to bite me. Good luck!
