I have a soon to be 2 yr old daughter who I am sure is left-handed. I don't want her to be left-handed. No matter how often I tell her to hold her spoon with her right hand, she will switch back to her left when I am not looking. I would not give her treats unless she takes them with her right hand. Recently she has been scribbling and she does that with her left hand too. I never expected to have a left-handed child... both my husband and I are right-handed.
What should I do to convert her? spank her?
I have a left-handed friend who was converted to become right handed. Her mum tied her left hand to the back of the chair so she wouldn't write it it.

I don't live in the western world. I live in Indonesia. It's not very acceptable to be left-handed as the left hand is the hand meant for washing your butt. In Indonesia, it is not table manners eating with your left hand... you have to use your right. Receiving and giving things to people should always be done with the right hand. Using your left hand is rude and if you accidently do, you are supposed to apologise.
There's no such thing as child services in this country. Parents whip their kids with bamboo sticks.

It won't do any good right now. The only thing you can do is wait until she's older. Hopefully people will just understand that she's too young to have appropriate manners yet. Just keep trying to encourage her when she uses her right hand. It's very difficult at this age to make any sort of big change like that. Thankfully, I live in the US so I don't have to worry (I know if I was in China, I'd be worried about my son too). When she's old enough that you can teach her manners (usually 4 or 5 years old), tell her that it's not polite to use her left hand and help her learn to use her right hand. But that's all you can do.

Are you an idiot????? Why in the world would you try to convert your daughter to be right handed??? Being left handed in instilled in you from birth, trust me. When I was a baby I would do the same thing, hold my spoon in my left hand, my grandma tried to switch it, and it switched it right back! Dont try to change her, there is nothing wrong with being a lefty! And to spank her for it? You need help, not her. Your friend should go to jail for tying her daughters hand to the freakin chair, thats abuse. I feel sorry for your child to have such a loser for a mom....

MY GOD what is wrong with the world today, that a mother wants to SPANK her child for being a lefty. ASK HER PEDIATRICIAN!!! Your F*cking her life up by being SO cruel. Did you ever think of the negative aspects of what you may be doing to her. My son is also 2 and I know for sure he is left handed, so is my husband and so am I. There is NO discrimination for being a lefty so leave your poor child alone!! And you never know, you might be surprised and one day if SHE wants to she could become left and right handed such as I.

You can never really convert her totally and are being cruel to force her to use her right hand or to spank her. She cannot help it and is not doing it to annoy you. Wake up! This is the 21st century.
Talk to her doctor about the issue if you must. There is nothing wrong with being a leftie. Although it is a nuisance to the person who is left handed in a world where most of the tools and controls are designed for righties, it is her own business.

There's nothing wrong with being left-handed.
Just as there is nothing 'right' about being right-handed.
It is not a "behavioural" thing, why punish someone dong what is natural to them? The outcome of any 'corrective' punishment could be far worse than your present concerns.
Encourage right hand use if you must, but scolding and yelling when she doesn't comply, may only cause confusion and rebellion.
What parent wants a confused, rebellious child these days?

Left handed means they use the left side of there brain more then the right. My three yr old son uses his left hand a lot but also uses his right. he uses both sides of his brain. If this is your culture just in-force while eating and handing things which hand to use. If you repeat it over and over it should work. in other areas that don't affect your culture let your daughter use which hand is comfortable. Don't discipline her just work with her. She is doing what comes natural to her discipline will only confuse her.

Why in the world would it matter to you which hand she uses? Left or right-handedness is a genetic characteristic and you should leave it alone and let her use the hand that comes naturally to her. I think it's cruel to deny her the right to use the hand of her choosing. And if you're one of those people who believe it's a sin to be left handed then get over it because it's not true!!!

You already asked this and so you didn't like the answers you received. You are a HORRIBLE MOTHER if you spank your child just because she is not "perfect" in your eyes. Are you perfect? I would think not since you are so cruel as to deny your child food because she is left handed. I hope CPS takes your child from you and give her to someone that will love and cherish her, because you obviously DO NOT!

I think it is very cruel to discipline a child who has no control over how she was born to be left handed. I think you should be grateful for being blessed with a precious daughter and that she wasn't born with a birth defect. My grandson is left-handed and he is perfect just the way God made him. Why would you want to change your daughter, I'm sure she's perfect just the way she is.

Why does is matter whether she is left handed?????????? If you aren't aware, it all depends on what side of the brain is working first that determines this..............Your friend should have had her "mum" jailed for child abuse a cruel and unusual punishment.........So what does left handed mean to you???????? To me it means, a talented lovely child that happens to write with her left hand........Be glad she has 2 hands, for God's sake, and stop dwelling on the negative........Take care, and if you don't want her because she is a lefty, I'll be glad to take her.......(See how silly this sounds???????)
