I have a 4 yr old who has finally convinced me to adopt a kitten! didn't take much as I love cats but really want to know if there's a difference in tempermants, personality and playfulness when it comes to deciding on a boy or a girl kitten? Also is it advisable to get boys neutered because don't they have a tendancy to mark their territory by spraying on things? If anyone has any kitty cat knowledge I'd greatly appreciate some advice!

Male and female cats or kittens are great pets. But both need to be neutered or spayed as when they go into heat this effects their behavior which is natural. Boys spray their territory and females rub their behinds over everything which when in heat is not very pleasant, plus every male cat from miles around will be coming to pee in your lawn. but both are very affectionate and playful.

the differences are slight - females tend to be more playful because naturally they are the "hunters" both are equally affectionate - which depends on each cat not gender

males are cheaper to neuter and this generally helps stop them spraying but is no guarantee however the cat will be happier and have less health risks if neutered

females generally dont spray but should be spayed for health reasons as well as so they dont produce more unneeded kittens

DO NOT get a young kitten - if your child is 4 you will be better off getting an adult or a kitten older than 8 months because younger kittens are still very claw aggressive and can hurt your child PLUS your child could really hurt (accidentally) a kitten or make the kitten be one that really hates kids.. an older cat will be smart enough to get away if it wants alone time...

go to a SPCA or other such place to adopt (NEVER buy from pet store) and ask which cats are best with kids - even save yourself some time and money and ask to see ones that are already spayed or neutered
dont declaw - declawing makes cats become nervous biters....

always spay or neuter.. any one who does not spay or neuter is not a good pet owner

I don't think there is a difference an tempermants between the male and female. Just be sure to have either one spade or neutered. Yes, the males will mark their territory if they are not neutered. The female should be spade due to the fact that they come in heat frequently and that is not good especially around smaller children. Keep in mind also that it is probably a good idea to have them de-clawed IF it will be a strictly INSIDE cat. Do not de-claw them and then let them outside, because they will not be able to defend themselves against predators.

Stimulation and Litter Box Training

By nature, mother cats lick the "back end" of their babies to stimulate the bowels and bladder on a regular basis. If you are the babies' new mother, this is a duty you will have to perform. After each feeding, gently rub the kitten on its low abdomen, as well as the genitals and rectum, with a cotton ball, cotton pad, or tissues moistened with warm water. Make sure you rub only enough to get them to eliminate; over stimulation will irritate the area. Keep an eye out for chafing and lingering dirt. If you find that stimulating your kitten leaves his/her anus sore or tender, try mineral oil instead of water.

I have found that nonalcoholic baby wipes work well to help kittens eliminate. After every feeding I encourage it urinate, then a couple of times a day I wipe the anal area for a bowel movement. Wipes also help reduce yeast infections, common with bottle-fed orphans. Kittens should, and almost always will, urinate during each stimulation. They should defecate at least once a day. One trick is to slowly count to 60 while you're stimulating a kitten; at that point, you'll know if they're done or if something's on its way out!

When kittens get to be about four weeks old, they are usually ready to experience the wonderful world of litterboxes (and you'll be liberated from stimulation duty!). After each meal, put the kitten in the box and see what transpires. If they don't get it right away, try taking its paw and showing it how to scratch in the litter. They'll catch on before you know it!

We prefer male cats - they seem more playful, laid back and friendlier.

Choose a kitten that is friendly from the outset. Most kittens personalities are apparent immediately. A shy one will usually stay shy.

Be sure to neuter him.

Favorite cat toy: DaBird

Fav furniture: kitty condo to jump on - well worth the $$$

Get a harness and leash for your kitty IF you take him outside.

Make sure he has an ID tag on him at all times (no bells - some cats don't like the constant noise).

Please don't declaw - read this info first.

I have 4 cats & love them like nothing else. All 4 are boys, but I am not sure I planned that. It seems to me that boy kitties like women best (I am female) but I do know that females can be just as loving and affectionate.

I strongly recommend getting either gender "fixed" regardless whether they are male or female. Females will go into heat & drive you nuts while males spray their territory.

Good luck on which ever new kitty you choose!

Both boy and girl cats make equally good kittens if neutered/spayed.. both sexes will actually spray (especially the male) when they are in heat..so it is better to get them fixed well before that..
I also reccommend getting your kitten from an animal shelter/SPCA..they have a neuter/spay policy anyway and it will save you the trouble of having to deal with it later..good luck!

Why do you opt for a kitten? Kittens actual take longer to conform to grownup cats and once you undertake a kitten you haven't any longer any theory of understanding what the grownup character would be like. a lots extra desirable decision may be grownup cat comparable in age - or consistent with hazard slightly older - than the single you have already got. With grownup cats what you spot is what you get. If the cat is loving and friendly and playful - it extremely is the way it consistently would be. Playful friendly kittens can in lots of instances strengthen as much as be unfriendly, aloof cats. the main necessary issue to do in introducing a sparkling cat or kitten is to accomplish that steadily. positioned the recent cat in a room with its very own nutrition, water and muddle container - a mattress room or bathing room may be desirable. shop the recent cat thoroughly separated from the prevailing cat for no less than some days. positioned an previous t-shirt with the recent cat to get its fragrance on it, then provide this shirt to the prevailing cat after which returned returned. this way they're going to get used to eachother's fragrance. The WORST issue to do is to basically plunk a cat down in the midst of a room with get entry to to the finished homestead. Being in a sparkling house is overwhelming and may be fairly frightening for many cats. So enable him get slowly used on your one room after which as quickly as he looks comfortable enable him see something of your place and the prevailing cat. additionally make constructive the two cats have well trimmed claws so in the event that they do provide eachother a swat they are much less probably to scratch eachother Do be constructive to have this new cat checked via at a vet until now you enable it ANY interplay including your cat. If it extremely is coming from a preserve it extremely is maximum probably already going to have been examined for pussycat Leukemia - a perilous and incurable illness. If that may no longer the case then this try is a ought to as FeLv is contagious between cats.

I have had lots of cats over the years. My boys grew up and participated in my cat rescues. I carry dog and cat food in the car in case we see one that needs a bite to eat. Over the years I have found that neutered orange tabby males are the most loving towards people. Visit your local humane society and rescue one.
