I've worked in the same office building for three years and know the personnel well. I was recently given two job offers in different departments. The HR rep already passed on my acceptance to the manager I chose, and I'm assuming, my decline to the other. Since I will bump into the other manager, how should I proceed? Should I go to her office to express my thanks for the offer I declined in person, or write a thank you card, or letter...?

I would approach the manager that you are to decline the offer from. Offer your thanks and yes, a thank-you letter is very professional for the opportunity that was offered to you. It's always professional to follow-up interviews too with a thank-you letter.

The thank you card might be a bit much that is up to you but to express your gratitude for the consideration and the job offer would be a very good move. You never know who your gonna need to help you up that ladder so it pays to go out of your way a bit to show courtesy and good manners.

Thank you card is the appropriate way to do this. Plus, you could get even a better offer from that manager...Forbidden fruit theory.

I would write a note (not email!) and express your appreciation for being considered for the position, and your regret at not being able to take it. You are very wise to be thinking of this; often people burn bridges in the workplace out of simple carelessness.

Face to face is always a better way to communicate disappointing news.

But then follow it up with a letter thanking her for the opportunity.

After all, you never know when your paths may cross again.

Write to the manager of the declined position, expressing your apreciation and thanks for considering you for the job, and be honest. Always leave doors open.

Lucy,

Do both, that is
write a Thank You card,
and present it to her in person.
Keep it short and sweet.
Never close a door if you
can avoid it.

Good luck on your new venture!
