I've been eating the shells on sunflower seeds for about 50 years, and I'm still going strong, healthwise. So, I'd say it's nothing to worry about. As some of the others said, it's just roughage and will pass through.

I do suggest, though, that you eat the whole seed at once and position the seed pointing straight forward or straight back along your molars as you bite and chew. That will break up the shell more uniformly and mix it with the meat of the seed, and will minimize the likelihood that you'll have splinters finding their way into your gums. That's how it works best for me.

of course you can't help but eat some no matter how hard you try not to. Sunflowers are sooo good for you also...if you are diabetic they will not turn to sugar like peanuts and other nuts.

Sure, they will just pass through as roughage and not fully digested
