Because it shows the amount of effort you put into your work. If you have an F in your English class, it's most likely because you don't try very hard (could also be for other circumstances, like missing school for a major sickness, etc) but it's most often related to lack of trying. So when you finish high school (or drop out) your future schools or employers are going to look at your grades and not take you. They're going to assume that if you don't put very much effort into your classes, what makes them think you're going to put too much effort into being a good employee or college student?

Don't get me wrong, grades aren't EVERYTHING, but they certainly do reflect the amount of stamina, aspiration and dedication you have, which will lead to them assuming things about your personality. If you aren't willing to get dressed for gym class, then what makes your job think you're going to get dressed appropriately for work? See what I mean? Grades show the type of person you are, or can be, so you want them to be as good as possible. Getting a C in a class isn't a bad thing, as long as you gave it your all. If you were just too lazy to do your homework, then what else are you too lazy to do? Walk the dog? Wash the dishes? Feed your kids? etc.

Just give everything you do your absolute best and everything will work out for you. Slack off, and it can end up costing you way more than you imagine for the rest of your life.

Grades are important so you will learn how to spell and use proper grammar amongst other subjects. The more education you get, the higher grade you have the more successful you will be in the workforce.
