Well, there are several ways you can clean it. I would put it in boiling water for a few minutes, and if the bristles are still intact, that should do it. OR you can put it in alcohol overnight, or a small amount of water with a cap full of bleach. Rinse these out before using. Why not just buy yourself a new brush?

Do not boil your toothbrush if you intend to ever use it again. Alcohol is the most likely thing you will find in your house, so there are already several good answers. Put it in alcohol or mouthwash with alcohol for 10 minutes. Actually 70% isopropyl alcohol - the kind you have in your house already - kills most things on contact, but you may as well go for 10 minutes to be sure that it soaks down into the deeper parts of the bristles. I just don't want you to try boiling your toothbrush.

Use the Aqua Blast Toothbrush cleaner from the makers of Aquafresh toothpaste.
You can find it in the toothpaste aisle. It looks like a box with tablets for cleaning dentures but it says clearly that it's for cleaning toothbrush.

Dishwasher and boiling water may just melt the bristles. Listerine or a dental rinse with alcohol will do the trick, but you must leave it soak for a half an hour at least. Since it is your Mom, and if she is not sick, I would not worry too much. Peace.

Rinse it in rubbing alcohol to kill the germs, then rinse well with clear water before using it.
Isn't that just awful that someone would USE someone elses toothbrush?? Yuck! The alcohol will do the trick though.

Actually, I wouldn't use boiling water as it can damage the bristles. Make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water instead and soak it in for a few minutes.
