I don't know how to surf or body surf and would like to do this activity since I have moved close to the beach. I don't have any equipmeent so I don't know what to buy or get. I have watched people on the beach do this and looks fun. Is it possible for a plus sized woman to do this activity?

Body surfing is great for any size person, because the water never lets you feel like what you weigh. I would start with body surfing and then boogie board surfing. To body surf, you have be confident of your ability to swim. And you just get up neaar the wave after it's crested and it's starting to break, then throw yourself towards the shore and kick lik h e l l . Hopefully if you caught it at the right time, you'll feel it taking you, you can stop kicking and start steering with your hands in front of you, Moving your hands and arms in the direction you want to go. It will take a bit of practice to hit the wave at the perfect time, but then you'll just know. With boarding, you'll go twice as fast with 1/2 the effert. If you're already a good swimmer and not afraid, maybe go straight to boarding. You don't need anything besides the board. They'll try to get you fins, or gloves, or such, but you don't need them. The theory is the same for boarding wait until the wave has already reached it's peak get it as it's starting to crash, and then SMILE:)

Body surf is fun but you can easily get thrown into the sand and hurt yourself. I prefer surfing really. It doesn't take much to learn and you will never forget the first time you catch a wave. Size won't really matter except it will push you into using a longer board. Longboards are the way to go anyways if you are just starting as they are easier to catch waves and are more stable. Before you commit to buy try a surf school where all the equipment will be provided to see if this is really something you want to do. I think that once you try it you will love it.
