Carkid makes a very valuable point. How can you put the national chains in a question on a Chicago food forum??? Heresy!
Portillo's is indeed the best fast food in Chicago.
Shaw's Crab House and Cy's Steakhouse are better than Red Lobster or Outback (or Rosebuds!) any day.
Santorini in Greektown and the Psistaria in Lincolnwood are the best seafood you'll ever eat.
"ONE" favorite diner? In Chicago? Is it possible to narrow it down that far? How could you when Lincoln Square, Lakewood, the Gold Coast and Halsted St are so full of phenomenal diners?

Read these answers in amazement and wonder. Yes, we all understand fast food, but, the people seem to have a problem identifying fast food menus that are served -s-l-o-w by chain resturants. Red Lobster and Olive Garden are chains with a standard menu that could be fast, but they take their time serving fast food. Their is a difference between a chain resturant and a 'fancy' gourmet resturant. These chain resturants are not even as good as cafaterias because the food is pre made and never varries. = fast food served slow.

Let me start buy saying that we live in Chicago, which is hands down the greatest place in the country as far as food is concerned. Which brings me to my next point at no point should anybody mention a nation wide chain for any of the food categories in regards to Chicago! So here are my answers :
Fast Food: Portillos ( it would of been Johnnies Beef in Elmwood Park, but Portillos has more variety and is more accessible)
Fancy Restaraunt: Rosebud Steak House this place is handsdown the best steakhouse in Chicago and if anybody says Mortons,Gibsons,Gene and Georgettis, Chicago Chop House, or anyother establishment they have not been to The Rosebud Steakhouse
Diner: Lou Mitchells

Of fast food--I like Wendy's best. Mandarin Chicken Salad!
Of chain restaurants, I love the crabs at Red Lobster and those incredible Chedder Bay Biscuits.

Like music it depends on what I feel like. Lately I find myself eating at Taco Bell a lot. A non fast food chain restaurant I like is BJ's. Their specialty is Chicago style pizza, and they have their own brewery. They also have original deserts, that are really good. If you want to go Chinese try PF Chang's. For a burger restaurant I usually go to regulars. But I really like In & Out (only on the west coast) Bob's Big Boy, and Tommy's Original.

Fast food would probably have to be....hmmm...Gold Star Chili. Fancy...not too fancy really, would be Outback or O'Charley's. As for diners, there is a little place called the Chili Pot that has chili, burgers, etc. and offers daily specials.
