Do a video documentary about a particular social issue. Look up the issue on the internet. Then, you could go around your neighborhood and ask various people what their views are on something important to society as a whole.

You could probably use that towards your college applications when the time comes. It would show that you have some skills that a reporter would have...awareness of social issues, interviewing, interrogating, broadcasting, etc.

Also, for anyone you interview about the social issue, some might want to be anonymous. So you can look into ways of editing how they are shown, possibly with a video editing software. Just make sure to ask their permission to show them on film, too.

You could also start a blog page, to talk about current events / social issues. Keep it professional looking, with a professional sounding user name, and separate from blog pages that are more social. MSN Spaces is a good one for that. Anyway, that would show that you keep current on those topics.

Good luck!

Learn to write, and write well. It's a lot more than just looking nice and reading off a teleprompter. Anyone who's worth their salt in the biz learned the basics and were willing to take any sh*t job for the experience.

You may ask your town paper for an internship, or even start your own club or paper. Often there are other students with the same interest, and it demonstrates initiative....also a plus for a budding reporter.

Get a video camera and a tripod and start doing your own TV reports. Watch them critically and practice making whatever improvements you can figure out. Compare your work to the local news reporters on TV. Eventually you may want to submit examples to your local station, especially if there is something particularly newsworthy at your school that they don't know about. Look into internships (free) at your local stations.

First either learn to spell, or use spell checker. Then, go to a small local paper and ask if they are accepting any human interest stories. Tell them you would like to participate in an intern program. Take a creative writing class. Any class that will improve your writing skills. Also a public speaking class. Talk to your school counselor. Good luck!!!

you cn always write articles 'on spec', which mean you are speculating a newspaper may want them, and send them to your local newspaper and even to ewspapers in other locations.

Get your English teacher to advise you on how to format a news item and get them to look at the first few that you write.

Keep sending items out there...

Every time an item gets published keep a copy of the publication in a folder. This will become part of your portfolio when you do enter the workforce..

First you need to learn how to spell and how to use correct grammar. Pay attention in English class, read books and newspapers, and you may need a tutor. Take journalism courses. Some newspapers have student reporters who send stories about their school. Ask your local newspaper if they have any openings for teens. You can do the same at your local TV station.

Go to a television station, tell them what you would like to do, and go from there. That is what I done about 30+ years ago, but didn't like what I was doing, and left the business soon after entering. Good luck

I think it would and this is also a great oppurtunity to get one started if your school is missing one. My advice is to recruit help from your local news reporters, you will be surprised how much people like to help kids, im talking about mentorships here. Talk to your parents and get them involved, run it by your teachers and counselors, whatever you have to do, do it ! Best of Luck.
