a= without
theos= God
Hence atheist = Without God. Or somebody who does not believe that there is a god.
Deism. deists believe that god exists and created the world, but takes no part in its function.
Theism - belief in a god or gods
Monotheism - belief in one god
Pantheism -- belief that all forces ,manifestations, etc., of universe are god; or the worship of all gods.
As you can see from the above definitions, the atheist is just one of five systems. It is interesting that the atheist seems to strike out at monotheism. It would seem that the more gods one has the less likely one is to incur the wrath of atheists. As a pantheist one has the grand choice of being accepted by atheists or beheaded by Islamic fundamentalists.

I see that most everyone has answered correctly.
My two cents due to inflation is now only worth about a 1/4 cent, but here goes.
The letter "A" before a word can sometimes mean "not having" or "without". The word "Theist" has to do with God or Deity.
Hence, Atheist = without God.

A person who believes that there is no God.
I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
