It's not a sickness. "Nodules" is a lay term usually used for lymph nodes. However, "nodules" may signify a mass as well, so it's not a very specific term, but as previously said, it is used meaning "lymph nodes" almost always.
Lymph nodes are part of your immune system and they enlarge whenever you have an infection or inflammation, which is by far, the most likely cause of nodules or "lymphadenopathy" (lymph node enlargement). Nodules enlarge near the area of inflammation/infection, let's say you have a tonsillitis or a sore throat, you will feel "nodules" in your neck area. If you have an infection in your legs, you may feel nodules in your groin, etc.
However there are other causes of nodules, for example cancer. If you have cancer in the breast you may have nodules in your axila. If you have oral or neck cancer you may develop nodules in the neck, and so on.
Usually nodules caused by infection or inflammation will hurt, and nodules caused by cancer will NOT hurt -contrary to the popular belief.
Other rare conditions may cause nodules. In children it is very common to find nodules, because they are still getting exposed to foreign substances in the environment and this causes their immune system to react, sometimes with enlarged nodes, but in them it is mostly a benign and transient thing.

usually they effect the throat. a lot of singers have had the problem.
