Climbing rope? Accessory cord?

I know that climbing rope is safe and it runs about $1.50 per foot. Anyone know of anything that is safe and less expensive?

Cheap and safe are oxymorons. The cheapest you can get is probably steel - that will provide some level of safety. The best you can find is a poly-fibered rope made of silk, and other strong threads. This will often be more flexible and stronger than steel. The difference is price per foot. We're talking 15-30 dollars a foot for steel, vs 45-85 dollars a foot for silk. Gauge will also make a difference in safety, as well as price.

If this is for a zip line, your going to have to calculate the maximum possible weight the entire line will weigh, with a rider of 350lbs at any given point. There are theorems and formulas to help you figure this out. You can use those to help maximize on safety, while minimizing cost.

If you can find the weight of both the line and a heavy rider, and calculate the strain the line will face (in ppi^2), then you can have a better idea. I think something in the neighborhood of 32 gauge steel, or 18 gauge poly fiber spun silk would do.

One should never use cheapest and safe to describe the same product.
