I would suggest Nutro Natural Choice Lamb& Rice for large breed puppies...it has the proper ingredients large breed dogs need for thier bones to grow properly and can prevent hip problems in the future. Go here to check it out... http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncdoglbpuppylr.asp

Also according to thier feeding guidelines for puppies (large breed) you should be feeding a 3 month old puppy who weighs 20-30lbs 3 1/4 to 4 1/2 cups of food per day.

PS Science diet is not really good food compared to Nutro and Iams does animal testing so do not feed your dog that!

http://www.iamscruelty.com/

PS to the person above who said Science diet has no fillers...you are on crack here is an ingredients list from science diet puppy food...Keeping in mind the first ingredient is the highest amount in the food.

Ingredients
Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Liver Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Brewers Rice, Fish Oil, Flaxseed, Soybean Oil, Iodized Salt, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, vitamins (L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

There are many different types of food you can feed your dog. Remember not to use a "grocery brand"
ie. Pedigree, Dog Chow and Iams. (not to offend anyone that does)
Your dog will consume more food and defecate more often.
There are premium brands like Nutro which is inexpensive yet good quality, I feed my rottwieler this brand,.. or you can choose a higher quality food such as Solid Gold, Eagle, Wysong.
Look at the ingredients, the less by-products the better.
You want to think of it the same way as your meals, Meat, potatoes and vegetables. Use puppy food, there is more nutrients for your growing girl. THere will be instructions on how much to feed your puppy.
Never free feed a strong-willed breed like a Rottweiler, the leader controls the resources. If you feed on a schedule, you will control the food and also be able to housetrain easier, she will eliminate on a schedule.

3 times a day is about right for a puppy. Purina Pro Plan Select is a good quality food as well as Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul. At 3 months she should only be on puppy food for about 2 more months and then off so she doesn't grow too fast and cause bone damage. You can't go off of the dog still being hungry if they have enough food or not. Are her ribs showing at all? You shouldn't really be able to see them but you should be able to feel them under a bit of fat. You can ask the breeder you got her from as they will know their breed better than anyone else.

Feed her Chihuahuas, Yorkies and other small yippy dogs.

Seriously, though - I've had good luck with Nutro, Science Diet, and ProPlan. Some people who prefer 'natural' brands recommend Wellness quite highly. Where possible, look for a 'large breed' formula to prevent over-nutrition.

Start by feeding according to the guidelines on the package, bearing in mind this is an average to slightly high estimate. Adjust as needed. Offhand it sounds like she's getting about the right amount now, but obviously will need more as she grows.

Three meals a day is about right at this age; at about 9 months to a year you will want to adjust her to twice per day feeding. Because Rotties are prone to GDV, you may need to go back to 3 meals per day if she turns out to be a 'greedy' eater.

Other things to do:
1) Check your scale - if it's off, your feeding estimates will be off as well.
2) Check her for worms, or just give her a broad-spectrum deworming on general principles.

All breeds have the same nutritional needs, but adults and puppies don't. Ideally, if you can afford it, put her on an all-natural puppy food that doesn't contain crap like animal by-products, cornmeal or dyes. You will find that even though the food costs a little more than the other brands, you will save money on vet bills later. All-natural food ensuer all around good health. I highly recommend Fromm's Four-Star Nutritionals. Your puppy will love the taste and feel satiated. She'll thank you for it!

I am a firm believer in Science Diet. It is so totally balanced with all the nutrition needed, plus no fillers. Your dog absorbs almost all of the food, which means very few piles in the yard.
You can actually tell just how much useless filler is in regular store bought dog food by the size and count of the piles in the yard. You will of course pay more for Science Diet. But when you consider that you are feeding your dog only a fraction of the amount that you would feed him if you were using grocery store dog food, you will see that in the end, the Science Diet is cheaper. Your dog will be a lot better off also.

dukefenton's answer above has many good points, so I won't repeat them.

If you're wondering whether your dog is too thin (or overweight), here's a couple of easy tests:

Gently run your hand along the side of her ribcage. You should be able to lightly feel her ribs.

As you stand in front of her, look down over her back. She should have a "waist" between her ribs and hips. With a dog that has long hair, you may need to run your hands along her side.

Look at your dog from the side. Her ribs should be slightly visible.

we feed our dogs (2 black labs) iams brand. with rottweilers as with many large dogs, they will likely eat whatever you give them. 4.5 cups of food a day for a 25 pound dog sounds like too much. i'd free feed the dog...leave the food in the bowl each morning and whenever the dog eats it, it's gone for that day. over-feeding the dog won't help its health.
