I would think that 'typing' is the worse for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. However, as I was thinking about this question, I was wondering - where do we get that term? who does it affect? I have been playing piano since I was 6 years old - the same type of movement as typing - even broader. I have always loved to type (started on a Smith Corona and Underwood!!) AND, writing was always high on my list. What makes me or others like me different? I know the syndrome exists, and there are times when my wrists hurt - but I keep a soft ball in my presence to strengthen my fingers and wrist. I hope that I never have this. I am now 53. It is probably the way people are holding their wrists when they type. My piano teacher used to tell me to "get those wrists and fingers up" and therefore, when I type, the position of my hands, fingers and wrists are never on the keyboard -resting - there is a greater flexibility involved. Who knows?

Any repetitive motion causes and aggravates Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. However, once you have developed the problem anything can cause pain. I have had it both hands but typing and writing do not bother me. I have the most problems when using tools or clenching objects for long periods. It would depend on the person.

Thats a great question. I think if you use a thick pen or pencil when writing- then typing would be worse- but they also have those pads and ergonomic keyboards.
It seems that each would have its downfall, because if you got it from writing- the tunnels may be inflamed, as to with typing- they may be collapsed from resting your wrists on the desk. CTS is caused by repetitive use of your hands and wrists, and once bad- anything that causes them strain will affect them.
I learned from my doctor once that if you feel the numbness in your thumb, index and middle finger- its in your wrist- but if your pinky and/or ring finger are getting numb, the problem is at your elbow- probably from resting your arms on an armrest or other surface for too long.

All repetitive movement is bad for carpal tunnel. I had surgery 22 yrs ago on both wrists and have never been sorry a day that I did.
