I tend to listen to music when I go to bed, music helps me fall asleep. I have always fallen asleep to music, but it is radio music, and when I do my homework, study for a test, get on the computer, drive, just any time I can get my hands on it-I listen to it. And, I have had a couple of people tell me that too much music can cause loss of brain cells and ruin your memory, is that true?

Music does not kill brain cells. Listening to idiot rhetoric kills brain cells. Music inspires the creative center in the brain. When I was younger, I could not fall asleep without the background noise of a radio. I listen to music, regardless of style, when I feel like I am creatively stagnant to revitalize and inspire myself. At this point though, I do believe that listening to music while you sleep may have a disruptive effect on you systemically as your mind cannot achieve total absence of external stimulus.
Keep rockin'!

I thought it would depend on the volume. I think it has been proven that loud music can destroy brain cells. Too much music at whatever level - well, one would think this would have a diminishing effect on the cells.
That then leads one to wonder if the type of music would be a prominent feature here. Classical, soft easy listening stuff too, mood music (to fall asleep to).... perhaps intensive listening to these would not have the same effect as loud heavy metal or similar.

nope. listening to too much music doesn't cause harm. being exposed to too much noise, however, has detrimental effects to the body. music is a pleasing sound, and anything opposite that is considered as noise. i haven't heard or read anything that says music can cause damage to brain cells, or to the body in general. and as far as i know, music makes you even smarter as you can focus better on what your doing, say, studying. furthermore, as what tara maroney mentioned in her article (url below), music enhances creativity. well, those are just some of the numerous benefits of listening to music. how about loud music, you may ask? that's an oxymoron lol. remember, any sound that's irritating is noise and not music. i am dead cert that music is anything but bad.

No. But maybe the hearing it it's too loud can be affected. But the BRAIN itself? That cannot be close to the truth. In fact, it's nearly the opposite that it HELPS your brain cells. After all, I read a study at http://sciam.com/print_version.cfm?articleID=0007D716-71A1-1179-AF8683414B7F0000
direct quote "Musicians, who usually practice many hours a day for years, show such effects--their responses to music differ from those of nonmusicians; they also exhibit hyperdevelopment of certain areas in their brains. "
I DO KNOW THAT DRINKING TOO MUCH ALCOHOL CAN CAUSE ONE TO LOSE BRAIN CELLS AND IN MEN CAN EVEN CAUSE ONE TO TAKE ON FEMININE TRAITS.
and also online at below (2nd link) it shows that "LOSING Brain CELL" urban legend was stereotype someone made up and is NOT factual at all.

kinda, you can kind of, and that's it, kind of, equate brain power to muscle power. if you don't use your muscles they will atrophy (shrink) and you won't be as strong. if all you do is listen to music then you aren't doing a lot of thinking about whatever. even when you try to figure something out you are using your brain, and when you use your brain your synapses fire. if you just let your mind wander and don't really use your noggin' for much then your synapses aren't firing and there is no need for new connections to be made. that's not a very concise answer, and there is a lot more to it than that, but in a nut shell, use it or lose it.

i don't know about brain cells.. but loud music damages hair cells in your ears and can give you hyperacusis or tinnitus. But nobody seems to care, until they are hit by these ear damages.. then it's irreversible..
