It IS a dim prospect!!! I don't know what I'd do without my angels.
How do the birds know how to build nests?
Ever seen those spitting cobras that spit venom from both sides of their mouth? Their spit tracks are so perfectly spaced apart that it gets the attacker in both eyes at once!
Look at the ant, how dilligently it works for the queen
the way bees make honey, what is their own purpose for all that honey?
the earths distance from the sun, any closer we'd burn up, any further we'd be frozen.
It's such an intricate design, this could not have happened by chance.

Many people choose to believe in a religion exactly because they can't "bear the thought of the total aloneness" of atheism or agnosticism. The mere idea of God gives most people a warm fuzzy feeling, but that a notion is comforting doesn't make it true.
Anyway, to answer the question: being faithless is a case-by-case experience. There will always be those who feel completely adrift in the cosmic void of the Big Secular Accident, but most get along just fine. Instead of trying to win points with an invisible father figure, they act to better the living, breathing world around them, to make a name for themselves during the short time they have, and to be just as happy, moral, and well-respected as the religious majority.
We don't think too much about death, and when we do, we have to smile and shrug- it's going to happen, it's going to suck, but it's the price of a life. The best we can do is accept the world for what it is, do our best to make it just a little bit better, and love the people in our lives with all we've got. Even the ones who constantly remind us that our lack of faith is going to result in an inconceivable amount of time locked in fiery torment, post mortem-- we know you mean well.

For me, it is a great loss. When I believed, I always had an extremely close relationship with God, praying regularly, giving praise and he was my best friend.
When I became a non-believer, it was not only the most enlightning moment but a lonely one. It is even lonelier when you are the minority that is hated by believers. But I feel I was liberated at that moment by truth that many can never comprehend or accept. It takes a lot out of someone to be atheist.
My father has cancer. He is a DEVOTED Christian since BIRTH, self-less and righteous. I don't believe Jesus chose to cure you over him. What makes you any more worthy than my young father? What makes you more worthy to be cured than the children who are being raped in Africa and literally tore apart unable to heal, urinate or defecate? They can't even walk from being gangraped in front of their mother, father, brothers, sisters and then witness their father being macheted to death. There are three year olds missing fingers and limbs because they were cut off with a machete.
This suffering is world-wide and Jesus chose YOU to cure of cancer. How can I be happy about that? I can't.

I AM SO GLAD TO SEE THAT YOU ARE STILL WITH US ANNIE. THIS IS FOR THOSE THAT DO NOT BELIEVE.
There are seven basic proofs God exists. Properly, they belong in a separate book all by themselves, but I will cover them briefly here.
(1) That there is a great CREATION is obvious. The very fact of the existence of THINGS; the universe, the solar system, the earth and all myriad forms of life upon it, demands a CREATOR!
(2) The existence of great, immutable, powerful LAWS (and I speak of the "laws" governing the physical universe; the laws of science and chemistry; laws governing the action of water in its three states; the cleavage and fracturing properties of minerals; gravity, inertia, isostasy, etc., etc.). The existence of these great laws demands a lawgiver!
(3) The intricacy of complex design; whether the feathers on the wing of a bird; the eye of a fly; the breathing apparatus of a dolphin; billions of intricately-designed snowflakes; your own muscular, skeletal, digestive and circulatory systems-etc., etc., requires a great DESIGNER!
(4) LIFE exists. Life in myriad forms. You and I both know that life only comes from preexisting life! This is called the "law of biogenesis." Life demands a great LIFE GIVER!
(5) Life only comes from preexisting life of the same kind! Thus, there is procreation, and the sustaining of life on our planet; the constant recycling of falling trees, rotting vegetation; the bacteria which break it down to become food for the insects which are food for dozens of other creatures, which are in turn food for larger creatures, which are in turn food for man; the cyclical character of our symbiotic environment which, like a gigantic machine was once "wound up," and is gradually running down, requires a sustaining force. Inherent within this proof are the laws governing the "conservation" of energy" and the laws of thermodynamics. It is obvious our universe has a great sustaining force-a GREAT SUSTAINER!
(6) Fulfilled prophecies, of which there are dozens, with dozens more yet to be fulfilled, constitute a great proof of Almighty God. Even simple high school or beginning college-level Bible handbooks such as Halley's, or the Angus Bible Handbook contain fascinating proofs from the spade of archeologists corroborating the prophecies of men who foretold the collapse of great empires and the emergence of others centuries and centuries beyond their own lifetime. Now, we are able to look back at such men as Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel and others, and see what they foretold actually HAPPENED exactly as they foretold it!
Many of the biblical prophecies are in process of being fulfilled. The serious student of biblical archeology knows that it is axiomatic that, wherever archeology reveals information about ancient civilizations, it always corroborates the biblical record, never refutes it!
(7) The final proof-one which dyed-in-the-wool disbelievers will doubtlessly scoff at-is answered prayer! Of course. God does not answer the prayers of skeptics and disbelievers. However, those individuals who have experienced the answer to PRAYER; those who have been healed of their sicknesses and diseases, who have actually seen miracles performed, are no longer doubting, but believing. Answered prayer is definitely a proof that there is a God who can hear. and answer!

wow! That is an awesoem testimony! I love hearing stories about God healing people, especially of something terminal like cancer! And When I hear about Jesus APPEARING to people! wow! My cousin, who was adopted in Thailand right after the Vietnam war, tells the story of when She met Jesus in the jungle while fleeing from soldiers. He told her to not be afraid, he was making a place for her. She did not even know who Jesus was until later in her life, when she was a christian, adopted into my Uncle's family, and someone showed her a picture of Jeus, and she recognized him as that man in the jungle!

I don't feel any of the loneliness you speak of. With so many people on this planet, and all the other critters on it, and so much in the universe, who's alone??
"Jesus appeared 2 me..healed me of cancer..I saw Him many times... "
Believer or not, do you know how nutty this sounds? To believe you see signs and proof of stuff is one thing, but to believe you SAW this person and many times...and as the person above me said, picked you of all people to heal? You live in a magical world don't you...

When hearts are so hardened against God, its very hard for them to be soft in other areas of life. I'm sure there's an emptiness that they can't label, a haunting of something missing...they may never admit it, even to themselves. But there is always tomorrow, where the hardened heart will have to be broken in order to heal, if they are blessed.

You are totally alone too. It's just easier for you to think you are not. Why can't it be that you made choices that helped your own healing? Or, conversely, did Jesus not love my cousin who died last month from cancer? She prayed and believed. I know her husband and two young children prayed night and day for her to recover. What about my aunt who died last week? What about my BIL who died in February? They all believed and prayed too. They weren't deserving of healing? Or, they didn't prayer correctly, right? I guess it's much easier to think one is not alone than to face the reality of the situation.

I'm not actually an atheist but I've wondered the same thing. People who live without Faith in God generally live for themselves. Either pleasure or power is pursued. Sex is wonderful but it can't compare to the hope that Christ brings to the soul!

Hey, whatever helps you sleep at night, dear. Some people don't need Jesus in their life to enjoy it.
P.S. If you truly have met Jesus, do you think I could get his number? I'd like to have a talk with the guy. : )
