True martial arts cannot be considered sports.
Beware, as there are differences between a Martial Art and a fighting sport. For one thing a martial art has been historically used in combat where as a sport has not. A sport would be classified as an activity that is for exercise, fun or entertainment.
I will not name any styles for fear of offending some people that feel they are studying a style that is a martial art when really they are just studying a sport.
Before I studied true martial arts I did not know the difference between the two, now that I have seen both sides of the coin I know this to be true.

All of the other answers are interesting but they do not answer the question. I believe the best martial arts sport would have to be MMA(mixed martial arts) ex: Pride Fighting or UFC. With the recent addition of weight classes and rules to the world of MMA there is no comparison. We now no longer have to guess which style is most effective, we can turn on Spike TV and find out that a well trained kick boxer is going to get taken down and submitted by a moderately trained Jiu Jitsu fighter in the first round if kick boxing is all he knows.

Popular is not the same as practical. In other words, what is popular is not the same as what works in the street in real life. As for a style that is popular for street, there is krav maga from Israel. To me, the best self defense is 1) Vigilance, 2) Run if you can, 3) Gun, 4) Sharp knife, 5) Focused chaotic fighting with palm, fingers, head, elbows, knees and feet focused entirely on deadly points on human body, flowing with opponent. For this self-defense to work, two things are mandatory: 1) Vigilance that can turn into condition red like right now. 2) The mind set that won't hesitate to be your attacker's worse nightmare. A conditioned mindset that if fight is your only choice, you will attack like a tiger and won't quit until attacker is down and incapacitated. Instant wolverine reaction. Pure offense.

if all the kung fu styles comes under one name of kung fu, kung fu will win. (tai chi's real popular and i'm sure there's thousands more people practicing other kung fu)

if all kung fu is counted separately, then i think tae kwon do and judo most popular because of Olympic.

of course if you're wondering about a martial art that's been tried out by most number of people, probably boxing. i mean boxing only counts as it's own subject here, and who hasn't tried little boxing ever?

I wouldn't say popular but I would say Judo is best it works with your every day movements and requires no yelling! A quick knee, when they're down a sway to the head with your elbow, etc.
