If your dad is allergic to cats you shouldnt get a cat at all.. I know this is hard, but it could be worse if your dad gets sicker and you will need to get rid of your cat at the end. Hair has nothing to do with it, actually is the enzymes of their saliva and dander.. so it wouldnt make a difference.

hi well as far as benifits go my daugther has really bad asthma and allergies so bad she had a bad attack nearly twice a month the doctors couldnt control it. for example if she went near a long haired animal within half an hour she would be in hospital, but i was told by her doctor to try getting a short haired kitty as this would help build her imunne system and defense against allergies im not excatley how it works but i know it has something to do with there fur and the fact cats a clean animals. so i got a cat nearly 6 months ago and im happy to say my daugther hasnt been sick once since she can now run around with the other kids.

Hmm...I think you need to research what kind of cat would be best for your family. The Sphinx is a nearly bald cat (Mr. Bigglesworth in Austin Powers 2 & 3) which has short, fine, velvety hair and is considered hypoallergenic (non-allergic). If thats not possible, here are some tips to help keep the allergens down in the house. Maybe you can list these as committments if you get a cat.

Washing your cat 2 times a week has shown to help reduce the allergen levels. Ensuring that you wash and rinse it well. Make sure you wash that face well

The use of allergy wipes such as Allerpet, has proved effective in reduces cat allergens on the cat and thus your home (studies showed that it was effective for around 80% of its users).

Ensure your cat is spayed or neutered.

(For Dad) Wash your hands after handling your cat and refrain from touching your face or eyes.

Wash clothes frequently and where more cotton and less wool.

Keep the house as clean as possible by washing floors and bed linen often with hot water to eliminate the allergens.

Wash clothes and bed linen using detergent solutions at 25°C (77°F) for at least 5 minutes - to extract cat allergen from bedding and clothing.

Use dusting sprays whist dusting to minimize dust spread.

Carpet is more likely to hold allergens - so if you can remove it in favour of wood, vinyl or tile floors.

Avoid heavy drapes that trap the allergens and dust.

Keep the cat out of your bedroom and laundry (keep it off your clean clothes) and provide it with its own bed.

Minimize other allergens in the house such as smoke, dust, moulds, scented candles, chemicals and pollens etc. Multiple allergens are linked to the development of more severe allergic reactions and asthma.

Create outdoor enclosures for your cat so it can spend some time out side and not confined to an enclosed house and you get some fresh air in your home.

Keep the cat litter in a well-ventilated area and dip rather than pour when you empty it and use litter that is as dust free as possible.

Use high-efficiency air cleaners, either central or portable.

Check with your allergist for any anti-inflammatory therapy or possibly desensitisation ("immunotherapy") options.

Hope they finish working on a vaccine.

actually it is not the cat hair which causes the allergy, it is the dander on the cat’s hair and skin (the microscopic flakes of dried saliva on cats skin which cause allergy). a good tip for minimizing cat dander is bathing the cat couple times a month will greatly reduce the dander, and shedding. a short hair cat will have less matting than a long hair cat. also did you know having a cat can be good for your health. http://www.webmd.com/content/article/79/96218.htm

If your cat stayed outdoors permanently then there wouldn't be a problem but you would have to have your cat neutered and check over regularly for any sign of an abscess as a result of cat fights. Just as an example, my other half is highly allergic to horses but I still have them. If he walks past my horses, there is not a problem but if he comes into contact with them, then there is a 'BIG' problem. I'm sure after lots of discussion with your parents an agreeable decision on this could be reached.

A short haired domestic cat will still cause allergies and they shed a ton. You need to be looking into specific breeds that don't shed.

Check out the Devon Rex, Cornish Rex and Sphinx for starters.

having a short haired cat is awesome! i have one. they don't shed as much as dogs, you don't have to brush knots out of their hair, you won't have to take them to get a bath as many times as a dog or a long or medium haired cat,and they make great pets. if you do talk your parents into getting a cat, adopt one from your local shelter.it will make a difference in that cat's life.it will have a home and a loving family instead of being put to sleep.

your dad also might have to take singular medicine every day so ya. but umm the benefits of having a short haired cat are: the cat sheds less, it cuddles more and if it ever gets flees the docter would be able to find the flees better and short haired cats are less money to adopt
**GOOD LUCK**

ok lets see here
Pros of short haired cats:
-less sheding
-not as much pet dander
-u don't have to constantly brush them
-thier coats are easier to look though to check for fleas, ticks, etc.
-if ur cat has to have surgery the fur will grow back faster
-short hairs are often considered more low maintence in the area of grooming and don't consume so much time when it comes to grooming.
