If they have everything already than you have already done something wrong.

Sort through their things because they have probably outgrown lots of it. Take it to a thrift store or 2nd hand shop in clean condition with all pieces in one baggie or box that goes to each toy. Lots of families have to buy their Christmas there. You could buy one good item for your kids that they will not grow out of too quickly. Then get kids names from the Angel trees in malls and purchase gifts for those that really need it. Explain to your kids that are old enough that Christmas is for giving love and gifts and if you receive gifts that is that much more special. If your kids are too young to know that you are changing Christmas just tell them as they each are old enough. You will feel better about giving and your house will not be so filled with non-used toys. The recipients will be blessed so it is a great win-win solution. Another thing is to ask grandparents, uncles/aunts, to give your kids money into their college fund that is set up. The kids get gifts from ssooo many people, especially when they are young, that these two solutions have come in handy and really are better than a bunch of plastic toys cluttering their rooms and your home. They will to learn giving unselfishly and also to prepare for their future by savings and still be able to have a great Christmas. For Halloween just give them the costume and bag and they will have more than enough candy and stuff from friends, family, and neighbors. Best wishes!

You have a right to do whatever you feel is best. Since you put the question out there, I will tell you what I do. About two months before the holiday season, my son and I go to his toys and take all the ones in good shape that he doesn't need and put them in boxes. Then we do something charitable with them-one year we went to a shelter in a nearby town and gave the toys to children there and another year we went and donated them to a hospital. This way we cleared room for a few new things while really learning the meaning of the season.

Maybe you should stop giving them so much so they can appreciate what they already have! Christmas isn't a holiday for giving gifts. It has just turned into that because most people have no idea what the true meaning is! As for Halloween, what kind of gifts would you give for that? It's a dress-up, trick or treat day. I think you have your ideas screwed up a bit. Just give your kids love! That's all they need.

Who is the one who has been giving them everything? Don't punish your kids because they have too much. Start by getting rid of things they don't use. If they haven't even looked at it in the past month give it to charity. Christmas is for the children. What a lousy thing for Christmas not getting anything. Quit buying them stuff all the time and tell your relatives to stop as well. Don't punish the kids for what the adults around them do.

May be instead of giving them a physical gift take them to a fun place you normally don't go to or make a special meal. Memories are far more valuable/ priceless and storage space isn't a problem. In answer to your question, I don't think it's bad not to give gifts, enjoying the holidays together what's important. My family sometimes will sit in a circle and take turns sharing the good things (only) we like about each other; warm fuzzies everywhere!

well.. that depends.. have you done it in the past.. are they old enough to explain WHY to .. Could they donate some stuff away to get new stuff.. or what my sister in law and her family do is they go skiing as a family using the money they would have spent on gifts. They make it a special TIME.. instead of a special gift if that makes sense. There are ways of making it a special holiday without buying gifts.. including making someone else's holiday a little more bright.. like a seniors home, or underprividleged children.. etc

I think that everyone should get somethin 4 christmas(yes I mean Christmas. not xmas). Depending on the childrens ages. I think that the cut off for halloween is about 11 or 12.

Maybe you should plan on doing something for others on Holidays. Like having your kids donate toys or make food for the needy. If you decide to forgo gifts for you kids altogether though you should still do something special for them, like special meals or games or activities. But I do agree that kids with lots of things don't really need to be continually spoiled year after year. Where will you put everything? But as they get older they will outgrow their younger things and need more age appropriate things.

Sounds like maybe you have overdone it in the past. Maybe just scale way back and give them gifts they can use like clothing, school supplies, movie tickets, but limit the gifts. Any child that is given "everything will never learn to work for "anything".
